A British woman has been killed in Cape Town after she and her husband were hijacked near a city township.

The unnamed couple who were on honeymoon in South Africa were held up in a people carrier near the international airport at 11pm last night.

Police said the hijackers stopped the vehicle in an area called Gugulethu and forced the driver out and then drove off with the British couple inside.

wow, sad but unsurprising story, i honestly feel crime like this is due to racial hatred and the lust for "revenge"

the women was probably raped as well.

Condolences to the husband and family of the deceased. What an incredibly sad story and what a shocking way to begin life as a married couple!!! Sickening....

Perhaps they went to Mzoli's. To be honest, I wouldn't go near a township at night. Tourists should be advised that it's generally not safe to do so.

They were returning back to the city at around 10pm last night when they asked their driver them to a popular hot spot on the Gugulethu area (east of Cape Town).

The junction where they were hijacked is also near Mzoli's restaurant - a popular tourist spot where diners can barbecue their own food on fires.

I hope for safety of future visitors... this hits major headlines... this is no one time event
People should be warned.. if they don't prepare... then at least they were warned... very sad
I hope these arseholes get every bit of torture and nightmare that will come there way

I hope the gauvamint makes this a priority case and follow up very quickly

As sad as it is, these tourists should have known better than to go into a township at night

They should have been informed that you don't go into a township at night on your own as tourists, never mind as South Africans who don't live there. :(

Pretty obvious they weren't racially motivated to steal the car (Gugulethu isn't a very good place to be hijacking cars if you're going for racial revenge) but murdering, and like you say possibly raping her, could be. If the idiots could just steal cars..

It's my belief that there must be a few locals who understand the importance of tourism for the area, and my guess is that Mzoli's in particular is an important draw and is directly responsible for the employment of locals there. I'm hoping that they will come forward with information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators, and *hold thumbs* I hope they get sentenced to life (which probably will turn in to a 10 year sentence).

Something about the story doesn't add up; why on earth did they go there at that time of night? Also, their driver should have known better. We all know crime in SA is violent and nonsensical, but because of a poor bit judgement it gives the country a poorer image than I think it deserves. Hopefully they nail these critters quickly!

If only... if ever we all can agree on one thing... and that we need to get rid of criminals.. no matter the colour ;)

Until then... we'll be moaning forever... like we do when we all debate race over & over & over .... :(

Was thinking the same thing...

I agree. Its a very terrible and sad thing to happen, but why go there? When you visit `n foreign country you do the research. There is a lot of places in london where u can not walk around at night, as is in paris and new york. To now blame South Africa would be a sad mark on the country. Still a terrible thing though :(

Poverty can be used as an excuse for crime, not for murders.

Very sad story indeed, but they should've known better. Why go to a dangerous place at night? You asking for trouble.

To be completely honest, they didn't do the best they could have to stay safe. What did they expect from a place like South Africa?

Truly horrific incident though. Can't imagine how the husband must feel. There's a chance she was raped as well. There is no punishment befitting such a crime.
