The Anni Dewani Murder Case

I find it very strange that Mr Dewani speaks through a publicist, Max Clifford. Instead of a lawyer. Heard him on SkyNews yesterday lambasting the SA justice system.

I don't where you've been but these dudes confessed to the murder and more. Yes, the got immunity because they told all while Nassief was found to have contradicted himself too much and was denied immunity. Sweet deal, huh?

ohannesburg - UK tourist Shrien Dewani was arrested in London on Tuesday night, the BBC reported on Wednesday morning.

He was suspected of involvement in his wife Anni's murder in Gugulethu last month.

The broadcaster reported that Dewani was arrested at 11pm London time after receiving a warrant from South African authorities.

Dewani obviously saw this coming which is why he's gone on the offensive about the SA justice system and claiming framing. He can now use that defence to argue against coming back here to clear his name on the grounds he won't get a fair trial. Apparently 'his friends' have said there's political pressure to pin this on him & not a South African so the government here can save face.

I heard Anni's father this morning say, he'll give him a call when he gets back to Sweden and encourage him to come back to SA & clear his name.

WTF do you mean. Cape Town is anything BUT murder capital. Every year thousands of tourist come to OUR wonderful country and return home with nothing but praise. I wonder what you think of the idiot who moved to Australia because of the high crime rate in South Africa just to get shot by a sniper.

The perception that SA cops are MORE corrupt than any other 1st, 2nd or 3rd world countries police is WRONG. There are movies made of Corrupt USA, UK cops but nobody sees that do they? This POM came here with one thing in mind. Drop R15000 to get his wife killed. I think its disgusting that did it.

Actually Cape Town has the highest murder rate of all the big cities. It was published last year. And I think it has been like that for a while now. But tourist rarely gets killed in Cape Town as most of the crime is gang related.
 
Strange that he's claiming he's being framed by the police, even after he changed his story numerous times. I guess it's his only defence.

You need to learn to read and follow a trail of argument. You said in an earlier post that the Kebble killers walked. My reply to you was an attempt to help you understand the workings of the legal process.

I haven't read the court documents, so not sure if this was covered : was Anni aware Shrien was involved at the highjacking? Would the other two guys simply have said 'guys - you can leave' and Anni knew during her last minutes she'd been setup?

No. According to the documents, they made it look like a real hijacking the entire time.
 
The media has stated that Shrien has already been arrested in London(yesterday) for these charges. Apparently this case could take YEARS to conclude.

No you asked two questions... Maybe you need to learn to read & follow an argument. My initial response was to the guy who wanted to know if it's possible to essentially get away with murder on a plea bargain.

And his publicist (!) still denies any involvement. They all call allegations of his involvement 'ludicrous'.

If the SAPS can prove the extensive communications via phone calls and SMSes between Tongo and Dewani, that would go a long way in proving Dewani's involvement.

Where are the cell phone experts? I presume that he would have had to buy a SA SIM card to use here? Or would a UK one have worked? So if they have his SIM number and that of Tongo, the exhange can possibly be proven ...

Cape Town - News of Shrien Dewani's late night arrest for involvement in his wife Anni's murder was a talking point for hundreds of South Africans on social networking site Facebook on Wednesday.

A Facebook page had been set up in memory of Anni shortly after her murder.

Many welcomed the arrest and said it exonerated South Africa from claims that it sought to blame a foreigner for the crime.

Other Facebookers labelled Dewani a "monster" and wondered how they could protect their daughters from people like him.

Nightmare

"How am I supposed to protect my 3 girls from monsters like him when they are older," Raj Thandi wrote.

"How could this amazing woman have seen this nightmare coming her way?" he questioned.

On another wall in Anni's memory, Dave Robinson said there were a lot of sick people in the world and hoped there would be a proper punishment for those found guilty.

"What kind of a man will do this 2 their beautiful wife? Why didn't he just let her go instead of killing her?" questioned Visheka Sook.

"That's why its so important who we marry in this day in age. My heart goes out to Anni's family," she said.

The British millionaire was arrested at the request of South African authorities on suspicion of conspiring to murder Anni, Scotland Yard told the BBC.

Due in court

Dewani, from Westbury-on-Trym, was expected to appear in the Westminster Magistrate's Court later on Wednesday.

Local authorities could not confirm the arrest on Wednesday morning and referred all queries to British police.

The arrest comes hours after the Western Cape High Court heard that it cost Dewani a mere R16 000 to have his new bride killed by a pair of South African thugs.

This emerged as one of his accomplices, Cape Town shuttle driver Zola Tongo, 31, was jailed for an effective 18 years for his role in the plot.

Anni, 28, from Sweden, was honeymooning in Cape Town when she and her husband were hijacked while in a taxi on November 13. Shrien claimed after the incident that the hijackers forced him out of the vehicle. Anni's body was found in the abandoned vehicle the next day. She had been shot.

The couple, who had been married for only two weeks, were travelling through Gugulethu at the time of the hijacking.

Tongo was convicted of murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and perverting the course of justice.

Two other people, Xolile Mnguni, 23, and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, face charges of murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.

'Wholly innocent'

Dewani returned to England after the murder and denied any involvement in it.

His publicist Max Clifford was not immediately available for comment on Wednesday.

He had issued a statement after court proceedings on Tuesday saying Dewani was "wholly innocent".

"Shrien is wholly innocent of any involvement in this heinous crime," said Clifford.

"These allegations are totally ludicrous, extremely convenient for South Africa and very hurtful to a young man who is grieving the loss of the woman he loved, his chosen life partner."

It all really depends on what's contained in those sms messages and calls. There could have been totally innocent exchanges between them being that he was their designated driver/tour guide. I really hope the police have the evidence here, it would be really hectic if it was eventually shown that he actually had nothing to do with it and the driver made the story up for a plea bargain.

I think it's related to the fact that he is 31 and has a clean criminal record. At 31 he has never been in trouble with the law before. I'm just guessing but that's the only way I can see it as being a mitigating factor
