i was wondering now

sometimes I close it with the task manager (SBSettings, only jailbroken phones)

does that mean that its not running in the background and wont accurately record my data?

Well you can check usage in Settings - so maybe it just uses publicly available info in the system.

What I'm saying is maybe it just checks what the data usage is via a public API in iOS, so it's all done by the system. That way it doesn't need to multitask, the system keeps track of data usage, and then when the app runs again, it just checks with the system again.

I know another app DataMan - where you need to keep it loaded all the time or it won't be monitoring data. I don't know of another way they can do this that is more background than having it loaded so I suspect if you kill the app (either SBSettings or by holding down and then pressing the X of the running app in the dock area) it won't be tracking your usage. Should be a quick test to tell, or just email their support address and ask.
