THE ASHES THREAD - AUS v ENG

The morale in the Aussie change room must be reaching new lows all the time :D

Why?
There is nothing you can do if you have no talent. I am sure the morale in the Zimbabwe change room is high, does that mean they are top of the world? No matter how high the morale they still suck :D. Morale and talent don't go hand in hand.

Unfortunately the team is a symptom of where the country is heading :(

As an ex saffer living in Oz, I am baffled by that comment. Not sure what you mean by "where the country is heading"?

Are you referring to the economy...the one that was the least affected of all by the GFC?
The stable political arena? The free and first class healthcare? The education that is envied by thousands of foreigners paying to do their degrees here? Perhaps the sunshine and beaches? The multi-culturalism and 'fair go'.

Sure, in the 12 yrs of Howard the country shifted a bit to the right...not more so than UK or USA..with that 'relaxed and comfortableness', but conservatism here is still very much the equivalent of the left elsewhere.

Not trying to start a political issue, just confused by your ignorant comment.

As for the team being a symptom of anything...the point made in that article is that it is more a "team of Cricket Australia than the nation", and that is on the money.

With some very talented players around, CA have tried to design their own team. Where does Smith fit into the picture? A specialist number 7??? Why the persistence with the impetuous Hughes? Why annoint the glamour boy Clarke years before he has shown any sense of maturity or leadership?

The thing to remember is that there is a huge amount of talent in a sport that is still by the national sport and played by almost every schoolboy, and when the team has undergone a proper evolution/revolution they will surely be back to their winning ways.

So what u doing on a Saffer forum?
Aren't the 1st world Aussie ones better?

England are playing well, the Aussies are not down and out just yet...
They will still beat the Proteas.

You probably missed it, but SA beat the Aussies last time they were there.
The Aussies are also no longer the #1 team anymore, for a year or so already.

Although we lost the last home series we played against them, I don't see them beating us again.

I was wondering about your username, and your obsession with bagging anything South African. Now all is clear. Bit disappointed with myself, actually, can normally suss out a bitter ex-pat after a few sentences.

Anyway, carry on...

Bold.

213/7 ... Aussies still need 151 to make the Poms bat again ... 1 day remaining in this match. Not sure who's going to this one. :p

Because the Aussies cannot stand losing. Zim is so used to losing that their morale goes up when they lose by less runs than last time.
When the Aussies get pummeled like this, especially in their own back yard, their morale will drop.

Serves them right for being the elitist pricks they are.

:)

Smart Stats

Matt Prior's century is his fourth in Tests and his first against Australia. This is also the sixth century scored by an England wicket-keeper against Australia.

England made their fourth total over 500 in this series, which is only the fourth time a team has done so in a series.

In England's first innings, three batsmen scored centuries. This was only the seventh occasion overall and the second time this series that three or more batsmen have scored hundreds in an innings for England against Australia.

England batsmen have scored nine centuries in the series so far, the most by a visiting team in Australia.

If Australia lose by an innings, it will be their third innings defeat in the series and their fourth since 2009.
In contrast, they lost only three times by an innings between October 1988 and November 2010.

Here's to waking up tomorrow morning to another innings defeat

From cricinfo:

England 644 (Cook 189, Prior 118, Bell 115) beat Australia 280 (Johnson 53, Anderson 4-66) and 281 (Smith 54*, Anderson 3-61, Tremlett 3-79) by an innings and 83 runs

Good win for the Poms. Sad to hear of Collingwood's retirement, but no better way to end his career, I guess.

Tell you what, it's not just winning and retaining the ashes that is impressive but how bloody emphatically have they done it???!!!! Surely some of the biggest and heaviest defeats an Ozzie cricketing team has ever suffered!!! England have been quite brilliant but haven't OZ been mediocre??!!! I guess you only play as well as the opposition allows you..

I tend to think the aussies are just horrible at the moment. I don't think it is a case of england being brilliant. Still for england this is a big thing and i am hoping the aussie talent rot is set to stick around for a bit :D.

You cannot stay on top forever, the west indies proved that and the aussies are backing it up.

the english were good. but the aussies were just ****ing awful. it's the kind of awful that makes you almost feel sorry for them.

Hopefully they stay this bad for our september/october home series vs them.
