Exclusive: Audi R8 to be reinvented as flagship electric supercar

R8 successor tipped to use Porsche platform; will follow mid-engine run-out model

An Audi R8 successor is being readied for a mid-decade launch, which will reinvent the marque’s famous halo model while also helping to reposition the brand as an electric forerunner.

According to Audi insiders, the supercar has not yet been officially signed off but is very much underway. It won’t be called the R8 and will take an entirely new design direction so it won’t resemble the long-standing model.

However, it will stay true to a pure sports car concept, with two doors and more power than anything else in the Audi range, albeit coming from an electric set-up.

The current R8 remains in production and a run-out model, expected to be a RWD GT, will be revealed later this year before all variants of the car stop being made at the end of 2023.

Talking about that specific model, Audi Sport boss Sebastian Grams said: “What we are trying to do is get as close as we can to that ultimate feeling of racing.” He added that 60% of its parts are similar to GT3-spec cars.

Audi R8 is no more - replacement will be electric with different name and more power

Audi will use the R8 reincarnation to assert its position as a leading electric car manufacturer and plans to launch the all-electric supercar in 2025. The design has not been signed off yet but the car is under development already and apparently it will be completely different from the current R8 - no similarities at all.

The current Audi R8 is slowly coming to the end of its life with the run-out model already planned to be the GT RWD version. Production is scheduled to finish by the end of 2023. The electric replacement will be the most powerful production Audi ever built and will follow the supercar recipe with 2 door body.

Sebastian Grams, the managing director of Audi Sport, confirmed the company is trying to create a car that offers the ultimate feeling of racing. Apparently 60 percent of parts for the new electric supercar are similar in specification to those found in GT3 cars.

At the moment, Audi R8 is built in the same factory as Audi E-tron GT and its RS version. It’s not an ordinary factory though, it is the Audi Sport factory formerly known as Quattro Gmbh and responsible for some of the most famous Audis ever created.

Once the production of Audi R8 stops, the small team of specialists building it will be involved in ramping up the E-tron GT production. Within a couple of years the team will be re-trained and will begin building the new, all-electric supercar. Audi wants to make sure it retains the talent to be able to deliver highest quality to justify the high price of the upcoming car.

Audi is Planning an All-Electric Successor to the R8: Report

The mid-engine V10 supercar is expected to end its run in 2023, replaced by an all-electric sports model that won't use the R8 name.

The Audi R8 is one of those cars that feels like it’s been around forever. But now, it sounds like its internal-combustion days might be numbered. A new report suggests that Audi is preparing to kill off the mid-engine supercar and replace it with an all-electric flagship.

That’s all according to British outlet Autocar, which cites Audi insiders who claim the German company is working on an all-electric successor to the R8. The publication reports that the new super EV is being prepared for a “mid-decade” launch and that it could run on Porsche’s EV platform.

Despite being billed as a successor to the R8, Autocar is keen to point out that the new car “won’t be called the R8 and will take an entirely new design direction.” Meaning that it won’t actually look anything like the current R8.

Autocar adds: “However, it will stay true to a pure sports car concept, with two doors and more power than anything else in the Audi range, albeit coming from an electric set-up.”

Audi R8 Coupe V10 GT RWD

Twelve years after the premiere of the first Audi R8 GT, Audi Sport GmbH is launching the second edition of this exclusive super sports car: the new Audi R8 Coupe V10 GT RWD. The 5.2 liter, naturally aspirated V10 engine's output has increased to 602 horsepower making it the most powerful rear-wheel drive unit in the history of the brand. A new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission for faster shifts and the new Torque Rear driving mode allows drivers to choose their own level of ESC support. This enables controlled and simultaneously precise oversteering. The seven-stage torque rear can be adjusted via the control knob on the steering wheel. The new R8 GT is limited to 333 units worldwide. New and exclusive exterior and interior features pay homage to the first generation of the R8 GT. These include, for example, sequential numbering, special light alloy wheels, and an interior in a combination of black and red. The new Audi R8 GT will be available at dealerships starting in 2023. The R8 GT Says Goodbye to the V10 Engine

Compared with the R8 V10 performance RWD with 562 HP, which forms the basis for the second edition of the R8 GT, Audi Sport GmbH is increasing the performance of the special model in order to bring it up to the same level as the quattro model. Specifically, this means: 602 HP from 10 cylinders, 5.2 liters of displacement, and 413 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the new R8 GT accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, reaches the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark in just 10.1 seconds, and reaches a top track speed of up to 320 km/h (199 mph).
