The Audi R8 Thread

Nearly-new buying guide: Audi R8

A supercar with ace handling and an atmo V10 is a steal at £70k - but make sure you're committed

Forget the pumped-up TT jibes: the R8 may come from the maker of sensible SUVs, saloons and hatchbacks, but it’s without a doubt one of the most exciting supercars around. To sit in it and drive it is evidence enough of this, but to hear it at full pelt is to fall in love.

This second-generation R8 has been around since 2015, with an open-top Spyder variant for fresh-air freaks launched a year later. Its defining characteristic, at least initially, was its quattro four-wheel drive system and its wonderful naturally aspirated and deeply sonorous 5.2-litre V10. Truth be told, it’s something of a belter, this engine, which was initially available with 532bhp or, in the R8 Plus, 602bhp. An update in 2019 increased the oomph even more, to 562bhp and 611bhp in the renamed Performance.

Unsurprisingly, the R8 goes like stink: every version can hit 60mph from a standstill in around 3.0sec and top 200mph. The only letdown is an occasionally jerky dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

And the R8 isn’t just about straight-line speed: it also corners brilliantly, with a graceful fluidity. It rides well, too, and despite it being about as wide as Belgium, you won’t need the arms of a boxer to steer it, because its wheel is delightfully light.

I did like the R8, now it's like all the other German cars, same design same car, no imagination. Just one car with tiny changes

New Audi R8 Green Hell Edition revealed ... and just 50 will be built!

Audi has whipped the covers off its new R8 Green Hell Edition, a limited-run variant conceived to celebrate the brand’s five overall victories in the 24 Hours on the Nürburgring since 2012.

Just 50 units will be produced, each featuring a unique build number. True to the name, the special R8 is finished in dark Tioman green as standard (as an option, however, buyers can also choose Ibis white, Daytona grey or Mythos black hues).

The bonnet, A-pillars, roof and rear end, meanwhile, are partially covered in matte-black foil. The doors feature the edition number in large matte figures reminiscent of starting numbers, while “Green Hell R8” logos adorns the sideblade and the windscreen.

In addition, the standard matte-black styling package adds highlights to the front end, sills and diffuser, supplemented by sideblades, side-mirror caps and wing in the same tone. The 20-inch wheels are likewise painted matte black, with red details on their rims.

Twin-Turbo Audi R8 Wheelies While Setting Quarter-Mile World Record

The Audi R8 is no slouch in stock factory form with 611 hp (456 kW) but what if you want to demolish everything at the drag strip?

Well for starters you need to pay Underground Racing a visit to give the naturally-aspirated V10 some forced induction assistance with a twin-turbo install and then you become the first R8 in the world to break the seven-second barrier in the quarter-mile.

Off the line, the car lifts its front wheels into the air and rockets away. It manages to cover the quarter-mile in 7.695 seconds at 196.76 mph (316.7 km/h).

Refreshed Audi R8 V10 Performance: prices for South Africa revealed!

It’s been a long wait but we finally have local pricing for the refreshed Audi R8 V10 ahead of the official launch in South Africa.

So, how much are we looking at here? Well, according to Audi SA, the R8 Coupé V10 Performance will be priced from R3 336 000, while the R8 Spyder V10 Performance will start from R3 592 500.

As a reminder, the platform-sharing Lamborghini Huracán Evo kicks off at R6 345 000 in coupé form and R6 950 000 in Spyder guise, though its version of the V10 makes a little more oomph (470 kW and 600 N.m).

For the record, the Ingolstadt-based firm’s local website suggests the naturally aspirated 5,2-litre V10 in the updated R8 generates 449 kW and 560 N.m in SA-spec form. This results in a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,1 seconds for the coupé and one-tenth slower for the soft-top model (top speed is listed as 331 km/h and 329 km/h, respectively). As before, drive is delivered to all four wheels via a seven-speed S tronic transmission.

Audi R8 (2021) Specs & Pricing

The iconic 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 motor is retained. For the SA market, it produces a screaming 449 kW and 560 Nm. Thanks to quattro all-wheel drive and a clever launch control system, Audi claims this generation of R8 can sprint to 100 kph in just 3.1 seconds and run into a top speed of 331 kph.

Audi South Africa is offering its new R8 in both coupe and spyder body styles, and there'll be numerous options available too. A cursory glance at Audi.co.za highlighted some of these; Carbon styling package (R150 000) , Laserlight headlamps (R64 500), Audi magnetic ride (R35 000), Dynamic steering (R27 000), and you can even get a gloss carbon engine cover for R77 300. There are also a few colours to choose from, but be mindful of the flagship Crystal paint range which starts from R30 000. There are a handful of alloy wheel designs to choose from, all 20-inch in size.
