I Drive the "Ronin" Audi S8! (2000 Audi D2 S8 Review) - JayEmm on Cars

don't know about you guys, but cars in films always hold a special place in my heart. Today I get to drive one of the coolest, but most understated. The first generation Audi S8 - as made famous in the brilliant John Frankenheimer film, "Ronin".

@hambone

You can see the Multitronic gearbox like two ice cream cones pointing in opposite directions, they are linked with a chain, as the chain move from side to side, the gear ratios change.

With all the other gearboxes you have a combination of actual gears that get shifted in the ratio needed. In the manual gearbox you shift it with a lever, and in Tiptronic and S-Tronic a computer controlling actuators select the gears.

So the overall wear and tear on a gearbox are minimum, and last a very long time, but the Multitronic on the other hand has fewer parts, but a high wear and tear. Due to the chain and the friction to change the gear ratio, you get quickly small metal fillings inside the oil, and that works like sand paper. They make use of filters to keep the oil clean, but in a short space of time, the filters get blocked, and if it wasn't serviced as needed, then the chance of something failing is high.

The extended 3rd party motor plans normally cover only up-to a certain amount, so when you do make use of that, make sure they will cover everything or a huge part at least. You don't know how the car was driven till now, so to be on the safe side, buy something that will have the least possibility to fail on you.

Here is a video explaining how the Multitronic work, you can see how much friction there are to "pull" a vehicle for 100 000 km.

Does Audi/Vw still use multitronic boxes on any current models?

Nope, it was discontinued.

All new variants from 2015 on were build with S-Tronic
It's a pity really, I'd say it was discontinued right at the point when they had worked out how to make it reliable and handle decent amounts of torque and power. The mid 2000's saw some dismal performance especially in reliability and longevity but from the B8, it was a nicely sorted box albeit with a bit of delay on take off.

S tonics are lovely but the ZF 8 speed has made any arguments for them moot.

Audi SA launches 10-year/300 000 km extended motor plan

Those looking to hang onto their Audi after the standard motor plan has lapsed, will be pleased to hear that there's now an option to extend it for another five years or 300 000 km, with a service interval of one-year or 30 000 km.

The extended plan by Audi South Africa covers services, wear and tear items and certain repairs after a specialised Audi Dealer assessment. Additionally, it warrants against potential defective workmanship, long with the replacement and repair of defective parts.

Must cost a small fortune.
For 1 year or 20,000km it cost approx R30,000. 2 years or 50,000km costs R50,000

They did revise their pricing.
My brother bought an A3 with plan expiring December 2019, it had 40k km on the clock so plenty mileage left on original plan.
Got quoted R24k for one year, time only.
After the launch of their new extensions, he could extend 3 years, time only for R26k.

When you add mileage to the extension it becomes a bit more expensive.

Getting my 2014 Audi A5 Sportback 2.0TDI next week.

Unfortunately not the 2019 version.

Got this message as i arrived at work this morning, "Do not exceed 4000 RPM". I parked the car, turned the engine on again, no message. Will try keep it under 4000 rpm on the way home and see if it happens again. If it occurs again I'll take it in to Ferolli's sometime this week to check it out.

Googled it, got a couple of hits as to the cause.

Within a few days, I started getting a warning with the EPC light: "Do not exceed 4000 RPM". It clears when I turn the car on and off. It happens occasionally when I give it some gas, usually on the highway.

I took it to the dealer while the code was active and displaying. They said it was the "oil pressure top switch." The part was replaced and I got the car back and a day later the same light went off.

The paperwork they gave me says "scanned using gff, found elec failure in reduced oil pressure switch. per gff, replaced switch. please note removal of compressor is required to replace switch. submitted feedback form in elsa"

I'm a bit annoyed at having this issue since I just got the car... Anyone know anything about this problem?

I had the same problem....., and the switch was replaced. It went away as a result. Go back and tell them that this happened again. It worked for me.
Good Luck!

EDIT: On the drive home from work, no issue, but i kept the revs under 4000rpm just in case. Will call Ferrolli's in the meanwhile and see what they recommend.

<SNIP>
No warning message on the way to work today, took it easy, kept revs under 4000RPM...

Edit: No further messages since the one time on 28 October 2019. Still keeping revs under 4000RPM but driving around in Sport mode mostly.
Edit2: Touch wood, the message did not re-appear again and it's now 18 Feb 2020.
