The Audi Thread

Dude if you have a multitronic/cvt then do that flush asap, they typically die from old oil, Ravenol is good for oil if oe is stupid expensive.
There was a TDi Avant same colour as mine that was scrapped as well. It had 110k km on the odo and was still spotless inside. Scrapping reason? The CVT blew up. So I can imagine that it's not a cheap item to replace. That being said, when mine does crap out, I'll probably attempt a tiptronic swap.

In other news, this arrived this morning so hopefully my James Bond smokescreen will soon be a thing of the past:

If I had to consider multitronic, I would get one that is less than 60k then do oil changes religiously, then it will last forever imho.

Yeah, not many of those with low kilos left unfortunately. Not B7's anyway.

I'm jealous that the US received the same car but with Quattro and the Tiptronic transmission at the expense of 7l fuel capacity.

can't go wrong with tiptronic imho. Same advice applies though, replace oil religiously.

That would be a job from hell, gearboxes swapping to a totally different box is crazy expensive and difficult. Unless you are a mechanical wizard with lots of specialised tools.

Just change your oil asap if your box is still good, if you keep the oil fresh CVT’s last. Depending on how your cvt is designed you may need to flush it multiple times, on some you can’t do a full drain only 70% of thereabouts so multiple flushes is the only way.

But do it asap before spending money on anything else.
A cvt repair can easily set you back R50k

I'm having the tiptronic oil done today at 130k km on an SQ5 tdi 2014....probably waited too long? Any thoughts?

Tiptronic is an old skool torque converter type automatic?
Those are the best when it comes to reliability, just about bulletproof even if they do get abused and don’t get regular oil changes.

8 forward gears, 3.0TDI twin turbo
Nice! Yes, 8 gears is tiptronic, 7 is stronic (dsg), mulitronic is no gears but never on a 3.0l.

I have a 2012 A4 3.0tdi, but s-tronic. I bought it about 5 years ago (160k km) while pissed after a heavy weekend of jack daniels (search criteria: 4wd, not a 4cyl (6 cyl sound is so sweet), because after owning 2 gti's (g6 and g7) I got sick and tired of wheelspin), but never an audi, and damn, all I can say is that I wish I got an audi right from the start. The ride/handling is on another level compared to vw.

If I could have a do over, I would have skipped the a4 (ground clearance, the girl scrapes the ground all over the place) and gone with a Q5 or Q7, and on the subject of the gearbox, I thought I bought a tiptronic (I was dumb back then) but got an s-tronic (which is still awesome, now on 220k), which is a rocket ship, she pulls away from golf r's and s3'.

i like the sleeper vibe. :)

Me too...mine looks like a soccer moms car but will kill most things on the road. Suspension is hard on mine with no adjustment but still an awsome ride.
I wanted an older diesel SUV to reduce depreciation and running costs and spent a bit extra for this performance and the supposedly bulletproof box.

One of the best versions of the 3.0 V6 TDi engine and it is mated to the ZF Engineering 8 speed unlike the Touareg and Q7 which use the 8 speed Aisin gearbox.
Thanks. I didn't know about the Aisins in the Q7 and Touareg.

Mine (when I went to have a look) came with 19", but I demanded the lot to replace them for 17" (50 aspect) (years of mental (eyes on stalks) and physical (straightening rims, replacing tyres because of the sidewall bulge) abuse of owning low profiles (from the gti's) in this country) abuse from the 1.8T on the other side of the lot or else there was no deal.

Best decision ever, adds to the sleeper vibe and is limo like (in relation to low profile (35-40 aspect)).

Cherry on the cake is that I now have 98 load rating tyres (goodyear (because they were the cheapest) but any trusted name brand will do), and have never had any damage (160k until 220k) from riding through potholes or debris (drove over 2x4 timber that fell off the truck in front of me without any consequence) on the highway.

Just the other day I had to go in to Hi_Q (goodyear) for 4 tyres (quattro, very important to keep all 4 tyres the same rolling circumference).

Ended up getting called out the waiting room 3 times, rear brakes, shocks all round and front control arms. R20k. :cautious:

It is a 'regular' torque converter type automatic gearbox whereas your S-Tronic is a dual clutch automatic gearbox.
Yes, I'm aware. (not so 5 years ago)

Top Tip regarding dual clutch trans:

SHIFT IT INTO NEUTRAL WHEN YOU'RE AT THE STOP LIGHT (like a proper manual, you don't sit at the light with your foot on the clutch).
