The Audi Thread

Said farewell to the Audi and dropped it off at WeBuyCars this morning. I do hope the next person has many trouble-free miles, which they should owing to the rebuilt engine.

Such a pity I could never figure out what caused the heinous fuel consumption on it. If it weren’t for that, it would make a lovely commuting and weekend car, but the reality is that it was just costing me too much in fuel as a daily driver :(
Time to get a diesel wagon :P

1.9tdi, I drove one in an Avant, amazing power and quite easy to get consumption around 6L/100km.
That was my dream car at one stage but spotty German engineering always kept me away, those models had a common R20k Aircon issue amongst other issues.

I encountered someone who mentioned their Audi A3 gearbox was deemed damaged by a repair shop, attributing it to a coffee spill. Is this plausible, and what amount of spilled coffee could lead to such an issue?

Anyone else had this issue before with one of the number plate lights giving up the ghost? It might just be the bulb needing replacing this time around I suppose. My Audi is an A3 1.8TFSI Ambition 2010 model.

Last time this happened (March 2018) they said the number plate light fitting connections had burnt so they had to replace the whole unit which cost me R2570 (VAT inclusive). It's a common problem apparently. The most irritating thing is the warning light on my dash going off every time I start the car.

March 2018 pricing:
-Number Plate Light Fitting R 1,735.00 ex VAT
-Labour (no. plate fitting) R 520.00 ex VAT

I am happy to report that this time round it was just light bulbs needing replacement which was sorted out during my latest annual service last month. 1 of my ignition coils also gave up the ghost just prior to the service, and some other niggles (boot struts were shot) were taken care of as well. For the service and everything that was attended to the total financial damage was just a tad over R4500 vat inclusive, so quite reasonable.

Spilled inside the gearbox while open? And then put back in the car with coffee being mistaken for oil?

No… just no. Sounds like the mech is looking at replacing the blinker fluid.

Was the car upside down in a ditch after an accident and the tow truck driver spilled his coffee while hooking up his tow truck to the car?

Unless they used coffee as a replacement for oil. Just. no.

The car is within the warranty period, but Audi claims the issue is due to liquid damage, therefore not covering the repair.

Have they produced oil test results that shows that the oil is heavily mixed with coffee?

According to my research online, fluid spillage can potentially short the transistors, leading to gearbox failure in theory. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of waterproofing. 50k repair

Damn! That just sounds like stuff out of a really bad horror movie

Maybe the gear selector on the S-Tronic models, but not the gearbox itself.

How can the workshop tell you the workshop spilled coffee on it if it's under warranty?

Oh sorry, we spilled coffee on it while we were working on it but I'm afraid that is not covered under the warranty.

How do they know it’s coffee then?

Perhaps my earlier post was unclear. The individual couldn't shift the car into gear. Upon taking it to the repair shop, they discovered damage to the gear selector/box caused by liquid, possibly coffee. The person alleges they don’t recall spilling coffee. Audi states that since it's liquid damage, it isn't covered under warranty.
