The Audi Thread

Thanks for all the replies!!

The reason I want to look at this car is that I want to trade-in my current car (Chev bakkie) and add around R40k cash for the Audi. The price for the Audi will then effectively be R180k

I started a thread on here about the Volvo dealers offering hardly anything for the cars and then reselling them at R40,000-R60,000 premium - but since I've seen some of the marques and the figures they were offered and sold for, seems that all marques are doing the same thing.

I very little sympathy for car dealers struggling when pre-owned sales drop to be honest

I agree. They actually force you to take a low price for your car, because on a trade-in they make the price. They can offer you what they want because they know if you really want a new car from their dealership, you'll take what you can get

Until people buy and sell privately the dealerships are going to rape the public!

I think the reason I have never done the whole private deal thing in the past was the expected paperwork, wait, hassle, phone calls and all the other crap. However after this last sale and realising people can go through a dealer for a small commission, I'll probably be doing this in future.

I guess the dealers also offered you R130 - R150k?

Never checked with the dealers:D. I always do private sales (facilitated by a dealership - they can take trade-ins and organise finance). Last time I tried I was offered R40k for an '04 Audi A6 2.5 TDi with 121 000 km which I sold privately through a dealership at R90k.

Cool. So this would only be if the buyer wanted to finance the car, and not pay you in full.

Guys, does anyone know how to keep current through the cigarette lighter sockets on 24/7?
On my A6 this was not even a consideration. There was always power.
I use an S2 running Waze as my perm nav device in the car, and an Afrihost Mifi for connectivity for the S2, my Nexus 5 and whoever else may be travelling with me.

With the A5 the power is cut when I switch off the ignition. This is killing me. The worst being that everytime I get in my car, I have to manually fire up the Mifi now where before it was always just on. Plus my S2 sometimes dies if it was not charged enough, so next time I use the car, I can't use the S2 until it has charged for a bit.

I have looked in the MMI settings but can't find anything related.

Sand_man, you do any driving this weekend? In love yet?

Haha, a little yeah. This baby's got some serious torque. Did some s mode driving!! Chalk and cheese!! Absolutely love it. Smoked a gti and an a3 something last night on the way back from work. 'Twas too easy. Familiar road through bez valley towards and down Sylvia's pass through to orange grove. Quattro burns through quicker than any fwd car is going to. The A6 just begs to be hammered through there. Looking forward to van reenens pass come July, although with wife and kid in tow I doubt I'm going to be let loose. Might have to put them on a plane and drive solo.

I'm still a bit bummed at how stock this A6 is. The centre display screen is plan red, not colour. I'm wondering if it changes to colour if I load up navigation? Rattles are killing me too.

Anyhooo generally very happy. This car is miles ahead of anything I've owned previously. Will send it in for a little tweaking and a once over by a specialist, will consider bumping the spec level with after market nav and ami but me thinks she's a keeper. Might even custom the sound a bit at a later stage.

And the A5 bro? I check you also fiddling with the sound setup and having a few niggles with iTunes and playlists and streaming content to the ipod? You wrestle it away from the daughter yet?

You come right with the 64gb sd card?

I like what you trying to achieve with your downloaded material finding it's way to your PC overnight and onto the Audi before you ready to go to work in the morning. I see you having power feed issues though. Seems like this seamless solution may be just out of reach.

Lol - Ye man - that Quattro is boss. My last 3 have been Quattro and won't change it. Feels like she is on rails. I used to get laughed at by HiQ when I went if for tyre changes cause my tyres were always extremely worn on the out edges from hard cornering. No need to decelerate on corners in that thing.

Funny how the GTi guys are hey. I used to often have them try take me on. Note I said "try". My favourite saying when asked what xyz model the car was that took me on was - "I don't know - I never got to see the back"

The MMI in my A6 was also red. Never knew at the time you could get it in colour - so it never bothered me thankfully. Think it had some orange in it too.

I reckon your biggest fix is the rattles dude. You don't want that k@k in a car liken that. Mine developed rattles after Tracker installed their unit in the dash. I was so pissed off. Made them come back and fix it.

Not wrestled the iPod back - yet. Audi spares was closed today so I could not get a cable so left it for now. This is next weekend mess around now.
What I did get sorted was using StationRipper to auto record some of my favourite stations at a scheduled time. iTunes Folder Watcher the picks up the new tracks and adds them into a playlist in iTunes and finally I use a playlist exporter to export my playlist to my Micro SD for the car. The final step is manual and what I want to eliminate with the usage of an iPod.
With the power issue in the A5 I am hoping the iPod can maintain enough power through the night to sync early in the AM when the latest tracks are in. Should be okay. If not, then this idea dies. I will book my car in to an auto electrician soon though to have this corrected.
Does your A6 lose power to the sockets when the key is out, or is it like mine was with constant power? Funny how something like this can be missed so much.

Come again? Wasn't aware this was an option. Probably missed where you posted the finer details but wouldn't mind if you could link to it.

Noticed the colour display in the Monday test drive (I refer to it a lot and call it the Monday test drive as this was an A6 I drove on Monday 2 weeks ago that was fully specced)!!! Such a pity it was in such poor condition! Had all the bells and whistles!!

Agreed. I can live with a lot of s hit but rattles is not one of them. I've sold cars at a heavy loss sooner than I ought to on account of rattles that couldn't be sorted out!!

Is that the iPod cable? Surprised the A5 didn't come stock with it. I assume the rest of the AMI kit is included? Should have the cable too?

Yeah, the iPod battery doesn't take all that long to charge to full capacity and then once fully charged it's good for plenty playback and standby time. If you doing 2 hours a day with the iPod permanently plugged in it will most likely be close to fully charged most of the time.

Not sure about the A6's power sockets!! All I'm using them for at the moment is a cigarette lighter!! The lack of extra kit is really disappointing!! Like you I get a hard on for high tech gadgetry!!

Some dealers take consignment stock. So in other words you don't trade in but keep your car on their floor until it sells. They usually take around 10% commission on the selling price.

On the '04 A6 the cigarette lighter socket stayed on all the time. I think it changed on the facelift in '09

So stupid of them to do that. Well auto electrician here I come.

I have a dual USB 5V 2A adaptor in each socket. No point in them if no power when the car is off.

In addition to my gadgets charging up overnight, one nice bonus was if we had a power drop or Internet connectivity loss, I could still connect to the MiFi in the car from the house.

Basically I've always browsed past private deals because a) the hassle of doing everything alone and b) I've always had a car to get rid of first. A trade in was much more convenient that trying to sell my mine privately then buying his privately etc

So this S4 was a private deal and again, I needed to get rid of my car. I contacted 6 dealers (3 x Volvo and 3 x Audi) to see what they could do. The Volvo dealers wanted nothing to do with me - but the Audi dealerships would take the private S4 onto their books and resell the car to me at no profit - but they'd charge R5000.00 handling free. They're then trade my car as normal as if I was buying a standard preowned car from them.

The owner dropped the car off at their dealership 2 days before I got and hey do the 80 point check, wash it, throw in the Audi cap and it's pretty much their car. In other words I bought it from a dealer in the end

Hi guys! I posted earlier in the thread about a 2009 A4 2.0 TFSI Multitronic Ambition. I went and drove it today, and that is just a monster! I really didn't expect that much power from a 2 litre. The gearshifts were also extremely smooth and no rattles or wierd sounds from the engine. It's just an amazing car, I'm in love with it. The owner also agreed to lower the price to R185k, it's trade value is R220k

BUT, now for the realistic part. It has 80 000kms on the clock and the motorplan expires at the end of this year. It had just been serviced by an Audi dealer. I will probably be driving 60 000km in the next 6 years. Can anyone tell me is it will be better to extend the motorplan to 7 years or take my chances without a service plan?? Before I buy it the owner agreed to a 160 point AA approved check on the car, which will also identify some hassles with the car. I am most worried about the Turbo, Gearbox and cambelt breaking, because it's expensive to fix.

Audi Cape Town just sent me an email to remind me of their R40k trade-in assistance on an A5, if anybody's interested.
