The Audi Thread

Guys, I have an issue with Audi Bruma and just want to see if my thinking is right...

Audi Airport has always been my go to dealer, but they closed down mid last year sometime. This forced me to start using Audi Bruma. The 2 dealerships are miles apart RE service. Bruma sucks. Simple as that.

The story...

Engine light came on. This sparked a bit of fear so I booked the car in to get it checked out. There was however zero change in the drive of the car - but rather safe than sorry.
After a week of testing etc... they determine the problem is due to low pressure on 2 of my pistons, and a gasket that needs replacing. They quote me R17k for the repair. I told them I would take it to Auto Service Centre for a second opinion as that price felt hefty for a problem that was not at all noticeable in the vehicle. Bruma tell me no problem, but the diagnosis is still going to cost me R6k. Sigh - I tell them they may as well go ahead with the repairs then if I am already in the hole for R6k. The service dude organises me a small discount and I end up paying R15k.

I collect the car, and about 2 or 3 weeks later - the fkn engine light comes on again! I contact Bruma and they tell me book the car in so they can run more tests. I ask them to confirm that there will be no additional cost to me as I already accepted their original diagnoses and quote - and understood the problem to have been repaired. They say no - it all depends on what they find.
This put me off. It could end up a never ending circle of taking my car in while they keep swapping parts hoping to fix the problem - while I just keep paying. After a bit of an argument, I told them to go **** themselves and that they would never see me again.

I purchased a bluetooth dongle online, and now use that to clear the warning. The error code that is associated with the warning is "fuel mixture too rich". So not too stressed. If it comes on - I just clear it.

Last week my car went to Auto Service Centre for it's next service. I told them to see if they could figure out the problem related to the engine warning light. It took them a whole 5 minutes to do what Audi took a week (and got wrong). And guess what - low pressure in the pistons still. My car is registering 2 bar where it should be between 3 and 6 bar. They reckon it is more than likely the pump, so they organising a second hand pump to test with. If the problem goes away, I will be in for about R8k.

What has really pissed me off here... Audi did not actually fix anything. They quoted me to sort out low pressure and repair a gasket. I still have low pressure. I still have an engine light warning. I am R15k poorer for it.

What kind of recourse do I have here? Is my thinking perhaps offside or do I have a case? I feel strongly I have a case so hoping not offside.

Update to the above.

Car was at Auto Service Centre just over a week ago to get the temp high pressure fuel pump fitted. Turns out they were spot on with their original quick assessment and pressure on all cylinders returned to normal. I asked them to leave the temp (second hand) pump in there and just charge me. R5k. 1/3 of what Audi Bruma charged, and actually fixed it.

The plus side is I am supposed to have better fuel economy now - but not experienced it quite yet as the performance boost is keeping me driving with my foot down. This car is a different car....

Oh - and just rolled over 180k kms - and going like a bomb still.

Anyone have experience with replacing xenon bulbs?

When I switch on my 2010 A4's headlights, the left headlamp goes on but after half a minute it cuts out and gives a warning on the dash. I got a quote from Audi for R5,000 to replace the bulb (R3,140 for the bulb alone which retails for just R1,000 om Amazon).

Any recommendations as to other places in Cape Town (northern suburbs) to do the replacement?

Hope it's not the control unit!

I went in for a bulb replacement, and ended up with an R11k bill due to the control unit being faulty.

Cr@p. Keeping fingers crossed it's only the bulb. R11k plus the R3k I'll have to spend on new rear tyres would probably equal 10% of its book value now...might as well sell it then.

Ouch, I have xenons too :erm:. Since you know what part it is, it would be interesting to see what other places charge even if you just call them for a quote. Try calling Ferroli's in killarney gardens or Wackers in Paarden Eiland?

Is it N1 Audi that quoted you the 5k? When I called them a couple years back for a service they were at least 50% more than Audi Claremont. They were very non-committal about the exact amount but theirs was 3k or just under that and Audi Claremont was R1800.

Yep, N1.

Will give those guys a call tomorrow/Monday

Take a look on YouTube, must be a pretty common repair of those xenon globes, then order the part with quick shipping from Amazon and fit it yourself, profit.

That does look cool. I do kinda want something that integrates with the car though.

I got my self one of these which I tucked into the cubby hole

Works well but it occasionally freezes when trying to skip back through songs. I'd left in an old mic from a parrot hands free kit, which might be the cause of some people not able to hear me clearly when taking phone calls.

Cool, will check it out.

'Well played' - Audi takes a swipe at Mercedes SA: Twitter reacts

Audi South Africa posted a cheeky post on Twitter on Wednesday (May 16) after an image of one of its German rival brands using an Audi Q7 was spotted online.

The post sparked much interest in Twitterville and left Tweeters anticipating some fun in the form of banter from Mercedes-Benz.

What caused the stir?

An apparent Merc advertisement shoot saw a few of the automaker's cars lined up on the side of a road alongside the beach. Ahead of the pack was a black Audi Q7 with a mounted camera.

Of course Audi South Africa took the opportunity to spot a bit of jesting.

Audi SA tweeted: "Spotted! MercedesBenz_SA shooting their next TV commercial…using an Audi Q7. Looks like our friends really do believe in the #BestOrNothing"
