The Audi Thread

Ouch! Audi trolls BMW on Twitter … and gets burnt back

Every now and then, big brands come to blows on social media. In the latest example, Audi used Twitter to take a bit of a pot-shot at German rival BMW, which didn’t hesitate in firing back.

It all started when the official BMW USA account tweeted an image of its M4 coupé along with the words “Sparks fly for this #M4 in exclusive Yas Marina Blue”.

Audi USA smartly quoted the tweet a day or so later (adding the words: “When you see it…”), subtly pointing out that the sparks in the background of the image had seemingly formed the Ingolstadt-based brand’s “four rings” logo.

BMW’s response in the latest bout of online shade-throwing between the brands? “We see it, where we usually do … in the rear view mirror”. Ouch.

Audi RS3 supply to South Africa halted … but only temporarily

We recently noticed that the RS3 Sportback and RS3 Sedan were no longer listed on Audi South Africa’s website and now the firm has confirmed that supply of these two performance vehicles to local dealerships is (temporarily) “no longer possible”.

Audi SA added that this would change at some point in 2019 when supply resumed.

“The supply for Audi RS3 to South Africa is no longer possible due to limited production capacity,” the company told CARmag.co.za.

“Supply constraints are planned to free up next year [2019] in which we will then open up these models to the Audi SA car configurator.”

Audi SA furthermore explained that it had “deactivated the car configurator for those models since a customer order is not able to be processed”.

So, what’s the reason behind the limited production capacity? Well, a report out of Australia late in August 2018 suggested the implementation of the new Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) standards in markets with EU-homologation was to blame.

As a reminder, the RS3 Sportback and RS3 Sedan each employ a turbocharged 2,5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine sending 294 kW and 480 N.m to all four corners via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Before the vehicles were removed from the local configurator, the hatchback was priced at R903 500 and the sedan at R933 500.

Audi to move away from ‘big mouth’ Singleframe grille?

Audi’s head of exterior design has hinted the Ingolstadt-based automaker will soon start moving away from its signature “Singleframe” grille.

Speaking to Car Throttle, Andreas Mindt said the brand’s trademark grille was not set to grow any further.

“It’s not the big mouth anymore. It’s not growing, growing, growing,” Mindt told the British publication.

Mindt went on to suggest Audi would soon start tinkering with the design of its grilles.

“When you paint the frame black, it looks bigger. When you paint the frame body colour, it looks smaller … there are a lot of things you can do architecture-wise to change that and we have a lot of good ideas for that,” he said.

“Maybe the border between grille and no grille will meld together – the frame is not like a border anymore. Just think about what you can do in the future to make it meld together,” Mindt said.

The new e-tron GT concept (pictured below), interestingly, features a fresh interpretation of the Singleframe grille design, with a honeycomb surface structure and its top section employing a cover painted in body colour.

Audi starts assembling A3 and Q2 (alongside VWs) in Algeria

Audi and its import partner have kicked off assembly of the A3 Sportback, A3 Sedan and Q2 crossover at the Relizane facility in the North African country of Algeria.

The Ingolstadt-based brand says it plans an annual capacity of “approximately 3 000 units” from the SOVAC plant that has been producing Volkswagen Group vehicles since 2017.

“This entry into the [Volkswagen] Group’s multi-brand factory is a logical step into the Algerian growth market,” said Peter Will, head of planning and steering of CKD/MKD/SKD Projects at Audi.

“By specifically training local employees, we are ensuring Audi quality and utilising synergies with the other Group brands in production and logistics, laying the foundation for continued growth in North Africa.”

In 2017, SOVAC built a production facility on a 150-hectare site in the Relizane region, some 220 km west of Algiers. Since then, daily production has “gradually increased” to approximately 200 cars, including the Volkswagen Golf, Polo, Tiguan, Passat and Caddy, as well as the Škoda Octavia, Rapid and Fabia and the Seat Ibiza, Arona, Leon and Ateca.

Mourad Oulmi, CEO of SOVAC, added he was “very proud that we will produce premium automobiles for the first time with Audi in Algeria, thus meeting the demand from our customers”.

“I am particularly grateful to Audi, which has been working for months to relaunch the brand in the Algerian market together with SOVAC. After more than ten years of partnership, we are entering a new era of cooperation,” Oulmi added.

That should be a good one, nice low mileage, leka motor that. Just keep in mind premuim vehicle equals premuim spares prices, even though lots of the spares can be bought at Goldwagen they are still relatively pricey compared to lesser brands or your typical Japanese/Korean run around. Give Goldwagen a call and ask about the spares prices you listed for that model. One thing to keep in mind is they use these oil filled engine mounts that need replacing every so often and they are quite pricey.

Whats the asking price?

Cant recall but was around 85k i think

I read those 2.0 motors have an issue with the oil pump or something so quite dangerous

After reading that i looked away

Some models do have quirks, what happens on those engines with the oil pump. R85K would be about right, hard to find them with low mileage though.

I drive a 2018 Q5 2.0 Tdi, something strange happened on the weekend, I was on a longish trip and filled up with diesel at one stage when the car was close to empty, and as I pulled away from the filling station the fuel gauge did not register that I just filled up, but was still showing just one red bar.

It's never done this in the 9 months that I've had the car, and I wasn't sure if the car was going to stop when the gauge thought it got to empty or not, but luckily it didn't. I eventually stopped at the next filling station and put in another 5 litres and then the gauge showed that it was full.

Has this happened to anyone before? Think the gauge is faulty?

Do you fill up while the car is turned off? Or do you fill up with it in “on” state or even worse while running?

As was said above turning it off and back on should sort it out but if it starts to happen repeatedly then there’s a problem with the sensor wearing.

VW/Audi doesn’t use a “float” as such and instead it works out a digital average using a metal on metal slider from my understanding which wears with time. Shouldn’t be worn on a 2018 though.

My GTI did exactly this more and more often as it got older.

I always turn the car off when I fill up, so it's always in the off state

Could try keeping it “on” as in dashboard display is on and fuel fills up on the dash, not as in ignition is on with engine started.

But I suspect you only had a once off here with the sensor getting stuck and won’t see it again.

If it does happen more often complain at Audi immediately as it’s a consult exercise to fix as they often replace the fuel pump as a whole unit and not just the part.

Methinks Audi brought out those two digit naming conventions to estimate at which age you should buy the applicable power output option for whichever car you want.

Oh yeah! 30 TFSI in a few years from now. 81 kW. What a time to be alive:ROFL:
