The Audi Thread

Going in for a 105,000 km service tomorrow at Ferroli. They quoted just under R1900 VAT inclusive.

Now i'm wondering, when last was my stronic oil changed. It was changed according to my service book at 24,000km by Audi Cape Town but whether it was done after that I don't know, at a certain point it looks like Audi Claremont got sloppy in terms of ticking boxes as to what was done. Its possible that they changed the oil at the 60,000km service but I suppose I'd have to call them and ask to be sure?

Yeah it would be 60,000 or 80,000.

Weird though that it was done at 24,000km so may have been shifted up because of that.

But yeah electronic service record should have it listed.

Or if you have the fake motor plan invoices it would be the most expensive one.

….
What do you reckon this would cost me if or when I request that they do it?

Edit: Rough estimate they said around 3k (maybe less) as the oil they use is on special now. Seems we will leave it till the 120k km service.

The oil alone is about R1800 if they don’t mark it up.

I know the dealers charge something stupid like R3500 overall from what I remember.

That for plugging a pipe in one end and turning a pump on at another effectively.

I would do it sooner rather than later to be on the safe side. Auto gearbox repairs are so expensive and regularly changing automatic gearbox oil definitely extends the life of a auto gearbox.

So the head mechanic reckons my gearbox might need to be repaired before then, so it would also be pointless to change the stronic oil now he said. I can't remember now did he specifically say gearbox, I'll ask tomorrow and make a proper note of what he said. He picked up this issue last year and mentioned it, where it has a slight issue going from 1st to 2nd gear and thereafter it's fine. He said it hasn't gotten worse since last year, but I suppose I also took care to pull off more carefully since he told me last year. I'll be looking at a 30k repair when the time comes. They don't do that there but he will refer me to the guy when it's needed.

Sounds like the good old “let’s swop the mechatronics unit for a new one and hope for the best” move.

The sad thing is that the mechatronics can in many cases be repaired and cheaper as well as more permanently at that, but few venture there or use the specialists that can do the job.

Obviously having it repaired does mean multiple days without a car which in many cases is not worth the saving to people.

My own case with DSG gearbox was a suspected input shaft bearing starting to fail causing a minor noise. Mechanic also said just leave it until it actually dies because opening it up is an expensive adventure due to the oil and then you also don’t know what you find because it could be a 12k job or a 24k job.

In fairness mine had 200,000km on by then so it did very well and even then it’s not the typical thing people fear but legitimate wear and tear.

I would change the oil, sometimes that helps resolve issues and seems to be the go to first troubleshooting job on auto gearboxes without an obvious problem.

Google "valve body" and "mechatronics" if you haven't yet and you'll see why fresh oil can make such a difference. The viscosity and quality of the oil makes a big difference, all that heat cycling and pressure can start to break the oil down, change the viscosity and proformance unde load.

Though with some gearboxes with wet clutch packs you can't replace the oil after a certain amount of clutch wear.

Anyone know a good mechanic in JHB north. Want to take my A4 in for a service and checkup.

Testing the waters, stupid to sell but I have to.
2010 A6 V6Tdi Tip, decat, dpf removed and software to silence the Ecu. 130 000km +- great condition, what can I get?

Nice vehicle/engine and low mileage but the A6 generally has terrible resale value. Is that the 3L TDi

Quite right, it's a lovely car, however it is not immune to any additional depreciation seen for large German sedans.

I would go with Webuycars and Weelee and add 30%-50% Over what they offer you for a price to put up online, and settle in for a long wait. Realistically I would say anywhere between 90k and 130k

Audi design boss takes a swipe at ‘iPad-like’ touchscreens

The head of design at Audi says the use of iPad-like screens sitting proud of the facia will quickly become dated.

Speaking to Autocar, Marc Lichte said the Ingolstadt-based firm now made a point of integrating its displays into the dashboard, as it has done with the new Q8, for example.

“In 10 or 15 years, when everything is augmented display or voice control, everyone will say: ‘Remember when everyone put an iPad in their car?’,” Lichte told the British publication.

“I don’t want to do this. I want to create timeless products,” he said.

Audi’s latest flagship models employ dual touchscreens stacked on the facia and centre console. In the Q8, the 10,1-inch upper display covers audio and navigation options, while the 8,6-inch lower screen deals with the climate control and other convenience options.

Cannot beat the Audi on Interior design and quality, but can they stop using the piano black pls. Hate to see all these fingerprints and scratches.

Anyone have the cambelt replaced at Audi recently? They said some nuts and bolts need to be replaced for R900. If it is not done, there is no warranty on the cambelt.

Wow, people still repair their cars at Audi outside of Freeway plan.

Likely stretch bolts used once only

You can't really argue with them can you, either you do or dont?

What is the total cost for the job and on which vehicle?
