The Audi Thread

Hey friends,

I need to change my rear brake pads. Audi quoting me R3k. So need some help.

First up any brands I should avoid?

Second any recommendations on where to fit them in JHB north?

I was thinking of doing this at a Supa quick or Bosch service centre. In the case of these guys they have their own brand of pads so guess I can't choose.

Any thoughts?

I put some Surebrake ones on my rears last year and they have been fine after being bedded in. Good stopping power, not a lot of brake dust and they were quite affordable. I think I paid R500 for both sets. I can't speak for longevity as I've only put around 6000km on them.

Also, I'm in PE but hopefully some JHB guys can chime in.

I am not sure of brand, perhaps contact your local Goldwagen and see what they have, I used Pagid on my Touareg when I replaced discs and pads a year or two ago. As for places to do it, VAG Spec Centre in Randburg or JS Worx in Ferndale Ridge, I take both our cars to Jared at JS Worx for servicing.

I just did a full overhaul on my brake system

Changed front Pads - Ferrado Eco something something only pads I could find. Rotors Surebrake from Goldwagen couldnt find ATE for the Audi no one has them, Fitted ATE rotors on the GTI and love them expensive but worth it Surebrake were around R1200 each rotor if it last a year its okay
Rear Pads I got Brembos from Midas R1600. 00 a set
Rear Rotors still have alot of life so didnt change that.
Brake fluid change as well

BTW if you have electronic handbrake you gonna need OBD tool to release the pads - dont let anyone tell you they will ad voltage to the motor and close or open it

Let us know how it goes. My fronts are warped (not sure on brand but they warped early on in their life).

Hi-Q did my rears and I saw them using a little gate motor battery but I didn't see what they did. I made the mistake of skimming the disks and now they are warped too.

I've heard a lot of people say that the Audi rotors can't be skimmed and once they develop a lip you should turf them.

I wonder why Audi specifically?

I don't think that has anything to do with Audi. My rears had a lip but I'm sure if I just replaced the pads they wouldn't have warped as I think there was still enough disk left.

I've heard skimmed disks run hotter (because they are thinner now) which causes high pad wear rate and possible warping.

Why my new fronts warped I don't know but they were done at an "Audi Specialist" in DBN (vicksautoclinic), I chose not to go with stealership disks and asked them to install good aftermarket ones and pads. I was so pissed I've never been back and now have no Audi workshop ("good" Audi mechanic) in dbn now that I know of.

I guess it makes sense, but if they skim it just to take the lip off I am sure the little bit of material taken off wouldn't make a huge difference since the brakes are vented anyway? You still have a large surface area to wick heat away from the contact patches and dissipate it to atmosphere via the vents. We need some physics experts to chime in here :D

The rears are not vented though. Also, I think the lip is adding mass which helps with the heat as they don't "just" take the lip.

Anyway, I don't have much experience with replacing brakes as I always had new cars and was very gentle on brakes (driving style, following distance, reading traffic etc) so never actually had to replace any before the next car came along.

Now I'm poor and need to keep this one for like forever but she has oil and coolant leaks :(

Yes that's true, although you would likely see more wear on the front pads anyway due to the weight distribution and weight shifting to the front when braking etc.

Oil leaks are just the German way of cars marking their territory. And if you fix one, you had better prepare for the next one.

I finished putting on the RS4 grille this weekend, but now it looks out of place on the scuffed and faded bumper. I think I may swap the silver rings from my broken grille across, as I'm not digging the 'all black' look too much.

EDIT: Uploaded a better pic.

Yeah, rear brake wear is almost non-existent.

Agree, silver rings FTW.

The simplest fix for that RS4 grill looking out of place is to buy a mint RS4 and put the grill on it ;)

Now delete the orange indicator caps. :)

I have a feeling the xenons will be quite rare.
Especially since 90% of the cars being broken up are front smash cars.

A scrapyard nearby has a left side light for me for just under R2k, but one bracket is broken, which is no good.

eBay might be a good bet as well, and have more stock and with some luck I can maybe get a set with AFS.
