The Audi Thread

Serviced my car recently out of motor plan.

Need to replace the front brake pads and disc's. I have a quote from local Super Quick and Vagspec and Bosch.

Super quick cheapest.

Any thoughts or reservations with going with Super quick?

I would go to VAG Spec, I’ve known one of the owners since his days at VW, they’re pricing is decent, as are their parts and workmanship.

Vagspec is king but Graaff brakes is not a bad option.
On my touareg I only let vagspec work on it, on the G7 I did the pads and skimming at Graaff.

With Graaff you can go buy the break pads at goldwagen( this is where vagspec will buy it anyway) and ask them to just fit it while they do the on wheel disc skimming so then you sorted for R600 for skim and labour to fit pads.

Those are all dealers. You're paying an extra channel of markup.

I did go with Vagspec so sorted.

Car is 9 years old and on 112k. They said I need to do the cam belt. Audi will not touch it before 120K. If I sort this out now, what gets done when I reach 120k?

Also have an issue with clutch and flywheel makes a slight noise on take off, will become a big issue later. Big money to fix though, I have a 3rd party motor warranty, but seems like they won't pay unless it's actually broken. Anybody with experience with an issue like this?

If cambelt has not been done in 9 years I would highly recommend doing it, Audi should know that most cambelts have mileage as well as time frame for replacement. The 120k km service would probably then just be a major service with filters, fluids, plugs, etc. being replaced and an inspection done of other components.

What car/engine is this again? Clutches and flywheels, in particular DMF's, are wear and tear items so most warranty's won't cover them, maybe for the first 6 - 12 months after install. Have you had it looked at by someone?

I told Audi when I took it for the service why they still havent considered changing it ( was still under cover on an extended service plan), they just gave me a standard response, if the system doesnt tell them to do it, and its not 120K, they cant do anything.

Its a A3 1.4. Stronic. - Vagspec picked up the issue with the clutch - its a strange soft noise on take off. If they need to look at it further, they need to take everything out.

Did the accelerator reset do anything?

Audi and VW and other dealerships are full of nonsense, hence why none of my cars g to them once warranty/service/maintenance plans are up.

Stronic is a DSG gearbox, it has a clutch pack, a bit more complicated than a manual with clutch and DMF although it still has a DMF which has to be replaced as it wears out so to speak.

Dealers DGAF these days or if ever.

I'll bet the farm the "noise" is coming from the DMF. DSG has internal clutches. I highly doubt they are the issue at 60k, but even 60k is low for DMF failure.

I would just live with the "issue".

Yep, most dealers will do everything they can get away with in terms of servicing, my MkVII Golf R had the front brake pads and discs replaced twice within 50k km's without a sniff of a kick back. And I didn't even ask for them to be done...

60k km's is low for any failure on a gearbox but the way I have seen some 'use' DSG's it isn't always a surprise. They get treated like torque converter manual gearboxes when they aren't anything like them, leading to premature clutch wear in most cases.

Yes, put the damn thing into neutral at robots and don't ride the brake pedal in traffic. Especially the dry clutch dsgs.

You can leave it in D but like you say, don't ride the brake pedal, minimise creeping in traffic, come off the brake pedal completely to move, etc.

Sure, but it's miniscule for the minute or two you are stopped, same as for stop/start nonsense and why I coded it off completely.
Don't get me started with start stop haha.

Anyway, in manual gearboxes, its bad for the clutch to sit at the robot in gear with the clutch pressed in.

Yeah, my manual cars are out of gear when stationary at traffic lights for instance, auto cars are left in D with brake pedal pushed in properly. I regularly tell the wife to do the same as she has a habit of not having as much mechanical sympathy as I do with cars.
