I did a search, and while there are a few threads about specific squads and games, I thought that it would be nice to have a unified thread to talk about the team in the lead up to the WC.

For those that don't know, a squad of local players have been in a training camp in Durban, and played Swaziland on Sunday. They won the practice match 6 -2. They are playing Zimbabwe in a friendly tonight at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The training squad:

Bafana Squad

Goalkeepers: Emile Baron (SuperSport United), Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates)
Defenders: Matthew Booth (Sundowns), Siboniso Gaxa (Sundowns), Morgan Gould (SuperSport), Happy Jele (Orlando Pirates), Thanduyise Khuboni (Golden Arrows), Inncoent Mdledle (Sundowns), Luchengo Mungomeni (Sundowns), Siyabonga Sangweni (Golden Arrows), Lucas Thwala (Orlando Pirates), Siyanda Xulu (Sundowns), Lance Davids (Ajax Cape Town), Bongani Khumalo (SuperSport)

Midfielders: Franklin Cale (Ajax Cape Town), Andile Jali (Orlando Pirates), Daine Klate (SuperSport), Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Teko Modise (Orlando Pirates), Thabo Nthethe (Bloemfontein Celtic), Matthew Pattison (Sundowns), Thulani Serero (Ajax Cape Town), Tlou Segolela (Bloemfontein Celtic), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs)

Firstly I am going to talk with my heart and say that the coach is doing a good job and will get Bafana to play well in the WC, but my haid is saying to me we wont make it past the 1st round with Mexico & France in the group. We can maybe give Uruguay a go, but dont think we'll beet France or Mexico...they are tooo strong

Look, our group is ridiculously difficult, but let's not lose hope. I will be watching tonights game against Zimbabwe, and nothing less than a win will do.

Is this being televised?

PS And why is the bloody reply with quote button all of a sudden not working for me in Firefox 3,6? I get the little turning icon but nothing happens!

awesome .. watched the highlights!

lets hope Benni gets some game time at West Ham now..we need him at his best.

Pienaar will also be a main figure and when Macbeth is back im sure we will get out of our group.

looks like Teko is back...i hope he doesn't peak in these camps though.

The game was great, first half looked a little shaky, but second half was very good. The second goal, was really good to see, a well worked team goal. Teko got his form back, great news for the WC. My only concern was that the defence looked very shaky at times. However, we probably only had 1 or 2 of our WC starting defenders on the field.

All in all, a good game, and hopefully the start of good things for the team.

Depends where we need him. If we don't have decent enough defenders then we have to slot him into the central defense and play him deep at all times. Against teams like France and Mexico who will make bombing runs right left and center you need someone with Mokoena's experience to hold up the defensive line (as captain of his Premier League team he is well suited to leading his defense and influencing their morale and concentration levels).

Well done to Bafana...
Zimbabwe also played very well especially in the first half. I wish that Knowledge Musona was South African, he always looked like scoring.

It was good to see players from Golden Arrows being given a chance for a change instead of the usual suspects from Chiefs, Sundowns and Pirates. At some point they had Siyabonga Sangweni, Thanduyise Khuboni and Richard Henyekane. Khuboni was even given man of the match award...wow not bad going for the youngster.

It looks like the confidence is slowly building up in the team. With the addition of experienced players like Pienaar, Sibaya, McCarthy, Mokoena, Masilela, we could be able to come out of our group.

On the point of Mokoena's best position, I would field him in central defence and not in midfield. He is not very good at controlling the match in the middle. I also saw that Kagiso Dikgacoi is now getting game time at Fulham central midfield. That should be good news for us. Now we need Benni to get some match fitness before the EPL season is over.

do you think Aaron Mokoena is a huge part of our team for the World Cup? would you have him at CB or Defensive Midfield?

Yes, if for no other reason than the experiance that he brings. I would play him at CB, as our group is super tough and we will need a strong defense.

Some confirmation of Bafana's next match, they play Namibia at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 3 March.

Warriors to take on Bafana in Durbs

By: SHEEFENI NIKODEMUS

NAMIBIA’S Brave Warriors have been invited to play South Africa in a high-profile friendly in Durban on March 3.

National team coach Tom Saintfiet told The Namibian Sport that the match will serve to inaugurate the 70 000-seat state-of-the-art Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, which will be one of the venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in June.

Sainfiet revealed that the Warriors will be in the company of FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who is scheduled to inaugurate the World Cup stadium.

“It’s been officially confirmed that Namibia will play Bafana Bafana in this inauguration match. Everyone in Namibian football should be very happy that we have been invited to play in such an important match. South Africa will field a strong squad so we will also go with our best players for the match. It is a chance to show that we can also compete against the likes of South Africa,” said Saintfiet.

He also said that this dream fixture would allow him to asses his team’s character. A preliminary 25-man squad will be announced later this week for a mini-camp, after which 20 players will make the final cut.

“We are not going there to lose, we will go there to get a good result. I want to see that my team can play with discipline and organisation. A team of 25 players of local and foreign-based players will be announced tomorrow [today], then we will choose 20 for the team to go to South Africa.”

The 1-0 defeat against Zambia during the Cosafa Castle Cup in Zimbabwe on October 25 last year was the Brave Warriors’ last official match.

Really dissapointed, we should have scored way more goals against Namibia. Our strikers really need to sharpen up. Also, Brad Carnel was shocking with that first goal, very poor defense. I just hope that Parreria can get the team to a point where they are competitive for the WC.

Our dear coach is bull shi**ing us the way Julius Malema is doing with the ancyl. Over paid and under performing. Has ANY rugby couch in history ever said ' oh well, sorry but we won't be winning cause ONE of our plays has a knee injury'? Fire him allready.

You can't read much into yesterday's match. Only 5 players (max) from that squad will go to the WC. I'm ot sure why he selected most of those players considering we are 3 months before the big one.
