Hmmm. I bought my Netbook for R2000. I bought a copy of Win 7 (Home Premium) for R1700. Now considering that Win 7 won't even run on my netbook, the cost of a Win 7 netbook immediately rises to over R4000.
Total price to run a Win 7 netbook: somewhere over R5000.
Total price for a UNR netbook: R2000
Personally, I don't think Win 7 represents good value for money at all. Each to their own opinion though

Windows 7 Home Premium works great on my Asus 1000HE ! Even Aero works fine, and I also managed to get the 1024*768 compressed mode to work.
Which netbook are you trying to use W7 on ?
My W7 upgrade (from the USA) was also pretty cheap.
As mentioned before an Asus Aspire One with an 8GB SSD and 512 MB RAM. Considering on my desktop PC, my Windows folder alone comes to 14GB, I don't think it very likely that it would run on my computer. And no, I haven't tried it. My attitude is one of horses for courses. UNR is designed for netbooks and runs very well on them. It is much lighter on system requirements and has a much quicker start up time - I have been running Win 7 for about four months now on my desktop and from boot up time to usability now takes close to three minutes. (64 bit Quad core 2.83Ghz 8GB RAM). Even on my desktop, when I am not doing Adobe or Office specific work, I find it quicker and easier to boot into my Ubuntu partition.
Don't get me wrong, I like Win 7 and think it is a good operating system for notebooks and desktops, just don't think it would suit my purposes for a netbook.

Yes, I agree, on your netbook W7 is probably an overkill - but maybe the W7 starter pack would be OK ?
The standard for netbooks has been 1GB RAM (exp to 2GB), 160GB HD, N270/N280 CPU, 10.1" (1024 * 600) for some time (more than a year), and they run W7 fine. Mine has a 9.5 hour battery life.
The newer netbooks are 2GB RAM standard, 250GB HD, 10.2" (1366 * 768), and they tend to come with W7 pre-installed. Some have processors better than the N280.
AFAICS, netbooks with Win7 go for close to R7k. Considering you can get a pretty good spec laptop for that, I really don't think it represents value for money, and I would dread the boot up time on an atom processor after a couple of months of usage.

Maybe, haven't checked, but am sure that you could get them for less.
My Asus 1000HE was about R3000, plus about R500 for Windows 7 (1/3 Family Upgrade Pack), both from the USA, all taxes and shipping paid.
Think that you can still get those for the same price, although the W7 Family Upgrade Packs seem to off the shelves.
I would imagine that you could get a Asus netbook for just over R4000 including W7. But it won't have the 1366*768 screen. Or this.
And the boot up time shouldn't be a problem if you don't overload the netbook with random junk - and if you do, format and re-install !

I wouldn't order from Wantitall, way too expensive, I just order direct.
Also, that's a 12" screen with separate graphics and a dual core processor - not a netbook as far as I am concerned ! Also explains the price ! But looks like a really nice machine.
Anyway, I could get it for R5000, all taxes and shipping included - seems like a pretty good deal - but too big for me, I want a 10.1" 1366*768 netbook - wouldn't mind the dual core CPU, fancy graphics and HDMI, though.

That sounds like a good deal, seems to be a nice machine, although I prefer the 10" form factore for a netbook (I already have a fancy sony 13" netbook).

I will check that out, the HP's are expensive in SA though.
I should be able to import the Mini 311-1025NR Netbook for R5000, but it is a 11.6" screen, still a little too big - looks nice, but only N270 CPU. Good graphics, HDMI. 250GB HD, long battery life, W7 HP. Certainly something worth looking at.
Any idea on local pricing ?

Your best bet is importing the bad boy, there is the 1000NR model available from Dion Wired but for R5000.

I don't see the problem? You got the HP Mini 311 at a bargain even if it was the ION LE model. Guide to change ION LE to ION, use at own risk.
