The big braai brag thread

R20k minimum...

All the extras and labour quickly add up.

I was very shocked when we did alterations last year, there are a lot of smaller costs that you forget.

Got 2 quotes, one for R 45k and one for R 40k. It's madness.

why doesn't the door open/stack to other side? gonna be *** hot standing there with that glass sending the heat back to you...

Space would be one reason, there isn't enough space on the other side to stack the door and it would get in the way of the stacking window.
Usability since if it stacked the other way I would have to walk an extra 4m if I only had the one door open and would become a pain in the arse really.

It was MEANT to stack inside the house, until costs and crappy builders came home to roost (as they always do really)

It actually doesn't get that hot with the door fully stacked open... most of the heat is drawn away by the chimney.

Ultimatetly the whole area will be under a large (60sqm) awning rather than that crappy gazebo, so people will be outside when the braai is going.

Aha.

I had a similar scenario. I wanted doors to stack inwards, but they got it wrong. And I actually prefer it to open outwards as then you get the full use of the space inside, you can even put furniture right up against the door if you need to.

Yes. Would you consider that as reasonable? I'm flying blind here and are looking for as many opinions as I can get.

Get a break-down of those quotes, line item for line item, and scrutinise it from there.

Maybe the braai is something ridiculous like R12k.. That happened to me, I rather went to Builders and bought a less fancy one for R5k.

Also, see what you can do yourself, like tiling and painting.

Since the chimney is shooting through the roof, you want that done properly, and maybe thats where the cost is coming from, all the finishing touches around the chimney and roof..

In my case the doors would have stacked against the chimney stack for the braai, so the space is pretty much dead ANYWAY..

Drives me nuts that our builders are so fscking useless that they can't get basic levels right really.... and by the time i figured it out it was WAY too late.

I also had 40mm gaps above my doors.. And all because I was usually at home when the big measurements and decisions were made except when the aluminium guys arrived, they didn't call me!

On this front, I think it only fair (for anyone in the Durban areas benefit) to commend my Aluminium guys.

Elangeni Aluminium were the most reasonably priced crowd, and their after sales service is impeccable. They came back to site 3 times to correct minor things that actually weren't their fault in the first place.
