I have a quick question, say I buy a Ledger nano s wallet. What's stopping someone from getting the random words (private keys) in transit before it reaches me? I'm assuming one ledger nano s already has the private key random words already generated? And all I have to do is to write them down?
No, the private key is not assigned to the physical hardware - you can choose to create a new wallet or use an existing one once you have it in your possession.
You have to set up ur pin number before you can get the private keys. So once they enter the pin they probably would have to wipe the stick for someone else to be able to enter there pin. So I'm assuming after the wipe new private keys would be generated.
The above is an answer I got when I asked the exact same question on Reddit. Just for interest sake...
Yep, it's saying what you said. I was just sharingThat is in agreement with my statement - the keys are not linked to the hardware, you can generate new ones at will
