Watch the BMW M2 CS set a Nürburgring lap record

Take almost 7m30s out of your day to watch this new 'compact class' lap record

The new BMW M2 CS has set a blistering 7m25.5s lap time around the Nürburgring's Nordschliefe. Schnell, indeed.

Yup, BMW’s Jörg Weidinger had a good day at the office. The German driver went eight seconds quicker than the Audi RS3 is his 526bhp rear-driven M2 CS, and you can watch the full lap in the video below. Go on, a little bit of procrastination won't hurt.

Weidinger actually shaved 13 seconds off his previous best in the M2. That was 2023’s 7m38.7s record, which was usurped by the RS3 last year. If you're thinking there's some annual one-upping going on, you could well be right.

Of course, the CS isn’t just any M2. The 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six in this car produces 82bhp more than the old M2 CS, and there's 479lb ft of torque too. You also get an eight-speed auto box, a performance exhaust, suspension that sits 8mm lower than the 'regular' M2 and optional carbon ceramic brakes. There are also model-specific engine mounts and plenty of carbon-fibre-reinforced bits (roof, bonnet, interior trim) – dropping around 30kg off the M2’s kerbweight.

New BMW M2 CS smashes Nurburgring record for compact cars

They call it the “Green Hell”, with 20.832 kilometres of undulating tar, known for its significant elevation changes and a bumpy surface.

Achieving a new record time at Germany’s Nürburgring-Nordschleife is a notable achievement, and BMW has done just that in the compact class of cars, with its new M2 CS.

With BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger behind the wheel, the BMW M2 CS has knocked the Audi RS3 off its throne as the fastest compact car on the ‘Ring. With a time of 7:25.5 minutes, Weidinger beat the Audi’s previous record by eight seconds.

"The BMW M2 CS has achieved a significant milestone with its lap time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nordschleife, showcasing the potential for combining performance, technology and exceptional driving dynamics into a single vehicle," BMW M boss Franciscus van Meel exclaimed.

“We are proud that the M2 CS has once again set a new benchmark in the compact car class with this lap time.”

The M2 CS is not the fastest BMW around the ‘Ring however. That honour belongs to the M4 CSL, which lapped the gruelling circuit in 7:18.137s.

BMW is crafting a 'street legal track day pack' for the bombastic little M2

Swan neck rear wing and more aggressive front lip? Yes please

Hot on the heels of the fighty M2 CS is this new road-legal ‘track pack’ upgrade for Bimmer’s baby M car, arriving next year with a feisty new attitude.

It's been developed by the M Performance Parts team - most likely for the standard M2 - and the most obvious change is the angled swan neck rear wing and front splitter extension. There’s a red tow hook thrown in too, because… track pack.

Essentially, everything that's been covered up by that black and white prototype livery looks to have been tweaked in some form, likely for more aero, def for more aggression. And how cool are those new wheels? Very, is the answer.

No word on any additional oomph from that 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six, but any potential increase will sit between the standard car’s 473bhp and the CS’s mighty 523bhp.
