BMW X3 Rugged Under Consideration for SA

The BMW X3 Rugged has not yet been greenlit for production, but BMW SA reckons there’s appetite for an adventure-ready X3. Here’s what we know so far.

At the recent media launch of the G45-generation BMW X3, the brand took the opportunity to show off an accessorised X3 that features all-terrain tyres, a towbar-mounted bicycle rack and a BMW-branded roofrack. Unfortunately, we only got to see the vehicle after sunset and the available lighting was poor.

Right now, we understand that nothing has been confirmed for production and the vehicle we saw was just a working concept to be shown to the attending media to gauge reaction. There was mention of paint protective film (PPF) being fitted to help prevent scratches from bushes, commonly known in the offroading circles as ‘bush rash’.

While the M Sport trim level is the most popular by volume in our market, we reckon there could be some appetite for a derivative that loses the sporty suspension in favour of something more gravel-biased.

However, our team was able to conjure up a render, giving you an idea of what a BMW X3 Rugged could look like. The concept is simple, give the G45 X3 a bit more capability in off-tar scenarios. Currently the CLAR platform in X3 application doesn’t make provision for air suspension, which would allow the ride height to be increased.

Officially, BMW claims 216 mm based on its technical documentation, but visually it looks a lot lower. All derivatives feature all-wheel drive, tagged as xDrive and automatic transmissions – a useful combination when it comes to gravel, sand and snow scenarios. We don’t think BMW needs to add anything mechanically other than a slight suspension raise and bash plates to protect the vulnerable mechanicals like the sump.

Exclusive: BMW iX3 spotted on the streets, launch is imminent

The 2025 BMW iX3 is one of the most hotly-anticipated upgrades this year as the original model dates back to 2021. The first rumors about the refreshed iX3 surfaced back in 2023 and the initial launch time frame was set for July 2025, but it may come slightly sooner. We spotted the alleged iX3 on the streets of Munich, Germany, and by the looks of the vehicle it may break cover pretty soon.

Of course, the iX3 was wrapped in camo, so it's kind of hard to distinguish all the design changes. The headlights adopt thicker LED lines for daytime running lights. It's hard to tell from these pictures, but the grille is somewhat smaller too.

The taillights have also been revamped. They keep relatively the same styling, but instead of forming an oval shape, they are now straight, aggressive-looking LED strips. Also, we can't see the fake exhausts at the bottom of the bumper.

Petrol vs electric: BMW X3 M50 vs Porsche Macan Turbo

Porsche has electrified the Macan. BMW has introduced a new, combustion only X3. Which is the better performance SUV?

In the battle of the back seats, it’s the BMW that comes out on top. The Porsche gets a surprising amount of headroom given its sloping roofline but without the optional panoramic roof it is a little dark back there and with a battery under the floor your passengers will sit with their knees raised. The wheelbase is 86mm longer than the old combustion Macan though, so there is more legroom than you might expect.

The X3 with its glass roof offers loads of headroom, legroom and plenty of light for rear passengers. The BMW’s bootspace is usefully bigger too, although the Porsche almost catches up if you include its 84-litre frunk space. Oh, and it may be worth pointing out here that if you go for the entry level Macan with its smaller rear motor, you get 540 litres of boot space before you even consider the frunk.

So yes, this Turbo probably isn’t the Macan that I’d have, but in a straight fight between top of their trees performance SUVs it beats the X3 M50. The Porsche may not be quite as practical and it’s a good chunk more expensive, but it’s actually more engaging to drive, the interior is smarter and easier to operate and it’s the more attractive car. Just remember to keep the sick bags on standby in the back.
