Admitting Islamic extremists now control some of his nation's villages and towns, Nigeria's president declared a state of emergency Tuesday across the country's troubled northeast, promising to send more troops to fight what he said is now an open rebellion.

President Goodluck Jonathan, speaking live on state radio and television networks, also warned that any building suspected to house Islamic extremists would be taken over in what he described as the "war" now facing Africa's most populous nation. However, it's unclear what the emergency powers will do to halt the violence, as a similar past effort failed to stop the bloodshed.

"It would appear that there is a systematic effort by insurgents and terrorists to destabilize the Nigerian state and test our collective resolve," Jonathan said.

Jonathan said the order will be in force in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. He said the states would receive more troops, though he will not remove state politicians from their posts. Under Nigerian law, the president has the power to remove politicians from their posts and install a caretaker government in emergency circumstances.

The president's speech offered the starkest vision of the ongoing violence, often downplayed by security forces and government officials due to political considerations. Jonathan described the attacks as a "rebellion," at one point describing how fighters had destroyed government buildings and "had taken women and children as hostages."

"Already, some northern parts of Borno state have been taken over by groups whose allegiance are to different flags than Nigeria's," Jonathan said.

The president later added: "These actions amount to a declaration of war and a deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of the Nigerian state and threaten (its) territorial integrity. As a responsible government, we will not tolerate this."

Since 2010, more than 1,600 people have been killed in attacks by Islamic insurgents, according to an Associated Press count. Recently, Nigeria's military has said Islamic fighters now use anti-aircraft guns mounted on trucks to fight the nation's soldiers, likely outgunning the country's already overstretched security forces.

Meanwhile, violence pitting different ethnic groups against each other continues, with clashes that kill dozens at a time. In addition, dozens of police officers and agents of the country's domestic spy agency were recently slaughtered by a militia.

One of the main Islamic extremist groups fighting Nigeria's weak central government is Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north.

The group has said it wants its imprisoned members freed and strict Islamic law adopted across the multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people. It has produced several splinter groups, and analysts say its members have contact with two other al-Qaida-linked groups in Africa.

The Islamic insurgency in Nigeria grew out of a 2009 riot led by Boko Haram members in Maiduguri that ended in a military and police crackdown that killed some 700 people.

The group's leader died in police custody, in an apparent killing. From 2010 on, Islamic extremists have engaged in hit-and-run shootings and suicide bombings. Recently, however, they've begun to use military-grade weapons, some of which they apparently seized from Nigerian military stockpiles.

It remains unclear how much effect Jonathan's announcement will have. In late December 2011, Jonathan declared a similar state of emergency over parts of four states, including Borno and Yobe. The extremist attacks continued despite that.

Nigeria's military and police also have been repeatedly accused by human rights activists and others of torturing and summarily killing suspects, as well as burning down civilian homes and killing civilians in retaliation for militant attacks.

The latest incident, in a fishing village in Borno state along the shores of Lake Chad, saw at least 187 people killed and there are allegations that soldiers are responsible. While the military has denied repeatedly that it attacks and kills civilians, the country's armed forces have a history of committing such assaults.

Separately on Tuesday, an official in the central Nigerian state of Kaduna said gunmen armed with assault rifles and suspected to be Hausa-Fulani cattle herders killed 11 people in a village there. And in Benue state, a government spokesman said an attack blamed on Hausa-Fulani cattle herders there killed at least 12 people.

Nigeria deploys massive troops to North East

Nigeria's military on Wednesday announced the deployment of "massive" forces to its northeastern border regions after the president declared a state of emergency in the areas where Islamist insurgents have seized territory.

"Nigerian Armed Forces...have commenced operations to rid the nation's border territories of terrorist bases," a statement said.

"The operations which will involve massive deployment of men and resources is aimed at asserting the nation's territorial integrity," it added.

In a televised speech on Tuesday, President Goodluck Jonathan imposed the emergency measures in the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, areas where Boko Haram Islamists have carried out scores of attacks.

The president for the first time acknowledged that parts of Borno state, the epicentre of the Boko Haram conflict, have been "taken over" by insurgents with Nigeria's sovereignty having been displaced.

He said the Boko Haram violence, which has left thousands dead since 2009, can no longer be treated as "militancy or criminality".

The latest violence, including a series of brazen attacks in the northeast, amounted to "a declaration of war," Jonathan said.

Nigeria begins offensive against Islamist Insurgents

Nigeria has begun an offensive against Boko Haram Islamists, raiding camps in a remote northeastern park, while more than 2,000 troops have been deployed to retake territory seized by the insurgents, a military source told AFP Thursday.

"Our men raided some terrorist camps in the Sambisa Game Reserve," in Borno state, said the senior officer who requested anonymity. "So far 2,000 troops have been deployed to Borno," he added, declining to comment on the forces sent to the other affected states of Yobe and Adamawa.

Been happening since 2009 and you only do this now? These terrorists should have been wiped out immediately after they started killing. And they use Islam as their excuse? Please, I know my religion and it does not condone violence on such terms. You only fight when you need to protect yourself.

Read the other day that there are camps in SA. All they are going to do is to make peace loving muslim locals look bad (such as myself). Please get them out too, we have no interest in associating ourselves with them.

Quaran seems to have lots of verses that says otherwise but then we're probably interpreting them wrong.

I suppose people interpret things as to how they see fit. Opinions differ. The Quran definitely makes reference to violence, but it does not condone it or ask the followers to behave in such a manner. They should only be applied in self defense. We are not allowed to make use of suicide bombings, kill innocent people and children and claim Jihad for everything. It's all bull.

E.g
Palestine - Israeli's kills hundreds of muslim locals every year. Thats a war, and if a muslim killed a soldier on the battlefield, then it's understood. Not advised, but understood.

Going to America and blowing up an apartment block, not allowed. Killing innocent people in the name of war? Crap!

But that just shows those Muslims that have decided to be "Good Muslims", so let's see what the truly "peaceful" Muslims do...

According to converts quoted by the Christian Science Monitor, their biggest reason for the dramatic rise in Islam is that the religion is a refuge from sex, AIDS, alcoholism, and domestic violence that is rampant in the black townships, where the greatest rates of conversions are seen.

It is estimated that Islam is the largest religion of conversion in South Africa.[5] Islam grew by sixfold in thirteen years, during the time from 1991 to 2004.[6]

Even though organizations such as IPCI, the Islamic Dawah Movement of South Africa, and the Africa Muslim Agency have been eager to proselytize in the region, there have been other civic organizations such as the MYMSA and the Call of Islam who considered other approaches to weave Islam into the social fabric of South Africa as a more significant way of making the Muslims' presence conspicuous.

According Michael Mumisa, a researcher and writer on African Islam, there has been an increase in the number of black South Africans converting to Islam particularly among the women and the youth.

He believes that for some of the youth and women who were schooled in the politics of South African resistance and confrontation with the security forces of the former Apartheid state, the acceptance of Islam has become part of a radical rejection of a society based on Christian principles which are seen as having been responsible for establishing and promoting the Apartheid doctrine through the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. The influence of the radical ideas espoused by Malcolm X is very evident among South African Muslims of all races. Branches of the Nation of Islam are already established in South Africa. Louis Farrakhan paid a visit to South Africa and was received by President Nelson Mandela and African Muslim communities.

Mmmm so just what is dawa?

Da‘wah or Dawah (Arabic: دعوة‎) means the proselytizing or preaching of Islam. Da‘wah literally means "issuing a summons" or "making an invitation", being the active participle of a verb meaning variously "to summon" or "to invite" (whose triconsonantal root is د ع ى). A Muslim who practices da‘wah, either as a religious worker or in a volunteer community effort, is called a dā‘ī, plural du‘āt. A dā‘ī is thus a person who invites people to understand Islam through a dialogical process, and may be categorized in some cases as the Islamic equivalent of a missionary, as one who invites people to the faith, to the prayer, or to Islamic life.[

...

Early Islam

In the Qur'an, the term da'wah has other senses. In Sura 30:25 of the Qur'an, it denotes the call to the dead to rise on the Day of Judgment. When used in the Qur'an it generally refers to Allah's invitation to live according to His will. Thus, when used in the first centuries of Islam, it increasingly referred to the content of that message and was sometimes used interchangeably with sharī‘a and dīn.

...

Proselytism

Muhammad sent Muadh ibn Jabal to Yemen and told him “You will be going to Christians and Jews, so the first thing you should invite them to is the assertion of the oneness of Allah, Most High. If they realize that, then inform them that Allah has made five daily prayers obligatory on them. If they pray them, then inform them that Allah has made the payment of charity from their wealth obligatory on their rich to be given to their poor. If they accept that, then take it from them and avoid the best part of people’s property.”

...

Location

Doing Dawah in the right location. For example, Mount Safa in the time of Muhammad was used for announcements. So Muhammad went there to make his point. He chose that particular location because he knew the people he was inviting to Islam. He knew their nature and characteristics, so he chose Mount Safa. He climbed up to its summit and addressed his people saying: “O people of Quraysh, if I were to tell you there was an army behind this hill would you listen to me?”[

So even proselytism in Islam is done with the sword...well, as soon as Muslims feel they are large enough in numbers...as was done to the people of Quraysh

Follow a religion for 22years = Knowing nothing about the religion.
Google a couple of pages and post in forum = Expert at that religion.

Knowledge. Debate. The more Muslims investigate their beliefs, the less chance of every village and town in the world, looking like the North of Africa...

The religion of peace is a political neologism used as a description of Islam. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, some politicians described Islam as a "religion of peace" in an effort to differentiate between Islamic terrorists, islamism, and non-violent Muslims.[2] Subsequently, some critics of Islam have adopted the phrase, using the term "Religion of Peace" in a sarcastic manner as a pejorative synonym for Islam. [3][4]

Research continues on the Koran, but also the beliefs of Muslims around the world, and relevant data is emerging.[1] For instance, a majority of Muslim political leaders and organizations have flatly condemned the attacks of September 11.[5][6] In some cultures, Muslims may report very violent views: 86% of Muslims in Jordan believed that death is an appropriate punishment for leaving the Muslim religion (a form of apostasy).[7]

The views of Muslims can vary widely by area, however: The Pew Research Center found that the percentage of Muslims who thought that "suicide bombings are often or sometimes justified" was 46% in Nigeria, 29% in Jordan, 15% in Britain, and 8% in United States.[8]

History of the term
The Arabic term Islam (إسلام) is derived from aslama, which means "to surrender" or "resign oneself".[9][10] The Arabic word salaam (سلام) ("peace") shares the same abstract consonantal root with the word Islam.[11] This has led to a widespread misinterpretation that the word Islam means peace.

There are critics of Islam who have argued that the underlying cause and motivation of the September 11, 2001 attacks was the doctrines and beliefs of Islam, and that Islam is intrinsically violent.[13][14][15][16] However, many notable Muslims have maintained that terrorism against civilians is motivated by a misunderstanding of Islamic doctrine. Mahathir bin Mohamad, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia said,“ Clearly Islam the religion is not the cause of terrorism. Islam, as I said, is a religion of peace. However through the centuries, deviations from the true teachings of Islam take place. And so Muslims kill despite the injunction of their religion against killing especially of innocent people.[2] ”

President George W. Bush publicly adopted this latter view, stating that "Islam is peace":“ The English translation is not as eloquent as the original Arabic, but let me quote from the Koran, itself: "In the long run, evil in the extreme will be the end of those who do evil. For that they rejected the signs of Allah and held them up to ridicule." The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That's not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don't represent peace. They represent evil and war.[17] ”

This prompted criticism from some quarters[13] and a poll of Evangelical Protestant leaders taken in 2002 revealed that only 10% agreed with Bush that Islam was synonymous with peace.[18]

Muslims who are keen to emphasise their rejection of violence have used the term "a religion of peace” as a description of Islam, like Dalil Boubakeur, mufti of the Paris Mosque, who said, "The prophet did not found a terrorist religion, but a religion of peace."[19] After the 7/7 London bombings, some Muslims in the West increased their efforts to present Islam as a peaceful religion.[20]
Controversy [edit]

The description of Islam as a "religion of peace" has created a great deal of controversy. Neuroscientist and New Atheism writer Sam Harris wrote, "The position of the Muslim community in the face of all provocations seems to be: Islam is a religion of peace, and if you say that it isn't, we will kill you."[21]

Sherman Jackson believes that the comments of Western politicians about Islam being a "religion of peace" is an attempt at "political correctness." However, Jackson asserts that:“ 'Religion of peace' does not imply that Islam is a pacifist religion, that it rejects the use of violence altogether, as either a moral or a metaphysical evil. 'Religion of peace' connotes, rather, that Islam can countenance a state of permanent, peaceful coexistence with other nations and peoples who are not Muslims...This position, I shall argue, is no more than the result of an objective application of principles of Islamic jurisprudence which no jurist or activist, medieval or modern, has claimed to reject.[22] ”

This use has also been criticised by both Islamists such as Sayyid Qutb,[23] and former Islamists such as Hassan Butt, who said,“ Only when Muslims admit that 9/11 and 7/7 were the work of Muslim terrorists can we move forward to the next juncture: which is recognising the hard truth that Islam does permit the use of violence. Muslims who deny this, preferring instead to mouth easy platitudes about how Islam is nothing but a religion of peace, make the job easier for the radicals who can point to passages in the Koran, set down in black and white, that instruct on the killing of unbelievers.[24] ”

That is, he suggests that the religion can only be a religion of peace if followers explicitly denounce the terrorist actions.

The term "The Religion of Peace" is used sarcastically by critics of Islam, such as Ann Coulter.[4] This is sometimes the case on anti-Islamic web sites and blogs, such as the web site TheReligionofPeace.com, which counts Islamic terrorist attacks[25][26]

Pope Benedict XVI refused to agree that Islam was a religion of peace. However he stated:“ It certainly contains elements that can favor peace, it also has other elements: We must always seek the best elements.[27] ”

Research [edit]

A leaked report by the Centre for Social Cohesion, from January 2009, discussed US plans to get involved in empowering UK Muslims to "mobilize against extremism". The leak also stated that roughly 30% of British Muslims believed killing in the name of religion was justified, and 40% wanted Sharia Law.[28]

Writing for the National Post, Barbara Kay stated that honour killing is not strictly a Muslim phenomenon and that it is enabled by factors including sexism, dowries and a lack of a dependable legal system. Nevertheless, Kay says that the murders are a Muslim phenomenon in the West, where 95% of honour killings are perpetrated by "Muslim fathers and brothers or their proxies". Kay warns that females do not dissent as one might expect either: The women may describe victims of honour killing as having needed punishment.[29]

Pew research in 2010 found that in Jordan, Lebanon, and Nigeria, roughly 50% of Muslims had favourable views of Hezbollah, and that Hamas also saw similar support.[7] The Pew Research Center also found that support for the death penalty as punishment for "people who leave the Muslim religion" was 86% in Jordan, 84% in Egypt, 76% in Pakistan, 51% in Nigeria, and lower in some other countries.[7]

According to 2006 data, Pew says that 46% of Nigerian Muslims, 29% of Jordan Muslims, 28% of Egyptian Muslims, 15% of British Muslims, and 8% of American Muslims thought suicide bombings are often or sometimes justified.[8] The figure was unchanged - still 8% - for American Muslims by 2011, although Muslims did become more satisfied with the way things were going, and with president Obama's job performance.[30]
Gallup poll [edit]

John Esposito and Dalia Mogahed present data relevant to Islamic views on peace, and more, in their book Who Speaks for Islam? The book reports Gallup poll data from random samples in over 35 countries using Gallup's various research techniques (e.g. pairing male and female interviewers, testing the questions beforehand, communicating with local leaders when approval is necessary, travelling by foot if that is the only way to reach a region, etc.).[1]

There was a great deal of data. It suggests, firstly, that individuals who dislike America and consider the September 11 attacks to be "perfectly justified" form a statistically distinct group, with suddenly more extreme views. The authors call this 7% of Muslims "Politically Radicalized".[1] They chose that title "because of their radical political orientation" and clarify "we are not saying that all in this group commit acts of violence. However, those with extremist views are a potential source for recruitment or support for terrorist groups."[31] The data also indicates that poverty is not simply to blame for the comparatively radical views of this 7% of Muslims, who tend to be better educated than moderates.[31]

The authors say that, contrary to what the media may indicate, most Muslims believe that the September 11 attacks cannot actually be justified at all. The authors called this 55% of Muslims "Moderates". They applied the same label to an additional 12% who said the attacks almost cannot be justified at all. To be clear, 67% of Muslims were classified as Moderates, meaning 26% of Muslims are not quite Moderates, and the remaining 7% are Politically Radicalized. Esposito and Mogahed explain that the labels should not be taken as being perfectly definitive, however (e.g. there may be individuals who would generally not be considered radical, although they believe the attacks were justified, or vice versa).[1]

Basically, you think you know everything about your religion, but you don't. Bet info like I've been posting for a long time now, just whooosshhes over your head.

Don't let them get to you F1 Fan, people see what they want to see. Some people just want to fight and will look for any enemy

Yes, the world is actually keeping a running total, of Muslim atrocities, specifically in the name of Islam, yet many Muslims claim that these are just people misinterpreting Islam. We keep showing that the radicals are interpreting it correctly, but are called Islamophobes for doing so.

Every Muslim needs to try and learn as much as they can, about what Islam actually is, from as many different sources as possible. Then look deep into themselves and ask themselves, do they really agree with what Islam represents. If not, walk away from it, if you have the chance. The other choice is being a slave to Islam.

As the Boston Bombings and the 7/7 London bombings have shown, it's Islam, in the minds of perfectly normal people, that came to the fore, during times of disillusionment, creating killers of innocents. It's Islam.

It's Islam that is causing the deaths of all those innocent people, listed in the links provided by Ponder. Look at those lists. It's Islam.
