Was just going to post something about how thin bread slices have become recently but then I thought why not start a thread dedicated to bread, all types of breads.

This is an excellent book for aspirant bread-makers.

I make bread pretty often, but I've not yet managed a decent ciabatta. It never has big enough air-bubbles inside when cooked, even if the flavour is right.

In fact, most of my bread has a fine, even texture.. but never super light, which I would like to do.

On a more serious note - the best place for bread: Fournos. Their Italian breads are unrivaled.

I think the OP was complaining about the thickness of his slice of bread that he buys.. As far as im aware bread is sold on weight, so just make sure its 700g/800g or whatever its supposed to be

usually buy Albany Superior Brown Bread, tried Woolie's Thick Sliced Bread but sometimes the bread's texture doesn't feel like it was baked properly

I fired up the bread machine last night while I was waiting for the soup to finish - chicken noodle soup and a freshly baked crusty loaf for supper. :) Pity homemade bread gets stale so quickly. :o

WHAT!Are they still around? Used to love stuff from Bread Ahead when i use to stay in Durbs, that was THE place to get baked goods!Judging by your sentence, I take it their quality has gone down?

SO also raved about them from his time in Durban. Sadly that is no longer the case.
