No deal it is then. EU shooting themselves in the foot.

Their loss.

Really?

In 2018, UK exports to the EU were £289 billion (46% of all UK exports). UK imports from the EU were £345 billion (54% of all UK imports).

When we look at the share of the EU's exports going to the UK there is a choice to make about whether to include trade among the remaining 27 EU countries in total goods exports. If we do include it, the UK share is 6.2%; if we don't it's 18% of the total.

It will be a long term benifit for the UK if they can get their trade deficit under control.

Now show us the figures of how much in exports the UK isn't allowed to make in 2018 because the EU forbids it ...

An independent UK can forge trade deals with anyone, an EU without the UK is still the same bureaucratic dinosaur with the same trade deals it has today, just minus the UK.

One of those has more potential than the other, guess which.

Remind me how long it takes for trade deals to be negotiated?

From a standing start on 31 October 2019. WTO rules apply from then with tarrifs.

How many small business and suppliers will hold out for that period?

So because it's hard it shouldn't be attempted? Best just give up without even trying?

God I hope you're not a parent or sports coach if that's your advice to reaching one's full potential in life ...

Oh they are going to do it. Just several casualties in achieving that. While the people who voted for it will suffer from it as well, as they loose their jobs etc.

You should sign up to be Bernie Sanders' spokesperson

You have to be realistic though. It's like telling your quadriplegic 5ft1 teenage son he's going to be an NBA star. No amount of dreaming is going to make that true.

Brexit Party fails to win any seats in first council elections

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party has flopped in its first attempt to win council seats, and may have helped hand two seats to the Remain-backing Liberal Democrats.

The hardline Brexiteers stood in by-elections for two wards in Leave-backing Gloucester and trailed in third and fourth places, taking more votes in one than the margin between victorious Lib Dems and Boris Johnson’s Tories in second.

But a spokesman for Farage’s party defiantly dismissed accusations of splitting the Brexit vote, telling the Independent: “If the Tories are moaning that we’re taking their voters, then tough.

That, but it's also hilarious how going from trade agreements that cover ~70 countries to 0 is framed as good, because you can start again from scratch and have to do all the work to maybe achieve likely inferior trade agreements (as they don't have anywhere near the clout that the EU has).

The US has already said they'd go to the back of the queue, because they want access to the single market.

It should be considered a problem rather than a good thing that Johnson is surrounding himself with a Brexit echo chamber. Is anyone he has appointed going to challenge his assumptions and decisions?

If those leading the UK were really willing to make hard decisions they'd actually take steps to fix the distorted economy. But they'll never do that because those in positions of power have a vested interest in the current system. Same applies to the US.
