SA-Bound BYD Dolphin Surf Scores Full Marks at Euro NCAP

The BYD Dolphin Surf (or Atto 1) achieved a ‘standout result’ for safety in its segment, with the South Africa-bound city EV scoring the full complement of five stars at Euro NCAP.

The BYD Dolphin Surf has scored a five-star rating for safety at a 2025 Euro NCAP test. According to Euro NCAP, the Dolphin Surf is equipped with “state-of-the-art crash avoidance technology”.

Euro NCAP noted that the Dolphin Surf achieved an “overall excellent performance” in all four categories of the safety test, where it provided “good protection” in the side-barrier test and more severe side pole impact, which earned BYD’s most compact EV the maximum amount of points in this segment of the assessment. Overall, the Dolphin Surf scored 82% for Adult Occupant protection and 86% for Child Occupant protection.

As for the other categories, Vulnerable Road Users and Safety Assist systems, the Dolphin Surf scored 76% and 77%, respectively. Euro NCAP attributed the safety scores achieved in these categories to the autonomous emergency braking system, driver-monitoring technologies and lane departure system.

BYD plans to build every car it sells in Europe on the continent, by 2028

BYD will make every car it sells in Europe, in Europe - by 2028. This comes straight from the company's EVP Stella Li, speaking at the Munich auto show.

This is obviously a response to the EU's recently imposed super-tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. BYD's factory in Hungary, which is in the EU, is expected to begin production by the end of this year.

Then, next year, BYD will start building a new production facility in Türkiye. "Within two to three years, we are training ourselves to be more European in production", Li said.

It will be interesting to see if this 'Europeanization' of BYD will extend to the cars' design and features - Hyundai and KIA did something like that a while back with pretty good results, but those were different times and we are talking about ICE cars.

BYD may also just continue with its current strategy, which is having a pool of models launching in China from which it selects which to take to Europe, sometimes with a name change but hardly anything more.

BYD's Ferrari rival confirmed for UK launch in 2027

Yangwang, launched in 2023, sits above BYD and Denza in the firm's pyramid

BYD’s Ferrari-rivalling Yangwang brand will enter the UK, but not until 2027, according to the firm’s Europe chief.

The Chinese giant will launch its Denza brand in Britain next year with a three-car line-up designed to take on premium rivals such as Porsche and Audi – and the more extreme Yangwang will follow soon after.

Stella Li, BYD’s vice-chairman and Europe boss, said the push to bring both brands to the UK comes because it is one of the “leading countries for premium car sales, and so is very important for our Denza brand – and very important for Yangwang in the future”.

According to Li, the decision to wait until 2027 to launch Yangwang in the UK was to ensure it would be able to compete from the off. She said: “We need to build up the team [for the UK]. We need to build up the foundation. And we will do that step by step.”

The brand was launched in 2023 with the Yangwang U8 - a huge range-extender luxury SUV that packs more than 1000bhp, outpaces the BMW M3, can turn 360deg on the spot and floats on water.

That was followed shortly after by the U9, an electric supercar that cracks 240mph and can use its fully hydraulic suspension to jump on the spot or drive on three wheels.

That's nice...
