BYD showcases the third-generation Tang SUV

Today at the Chengdu Auto Show, BYD showcased the third-generation Tang SUV, which is an important model because it's meant to revitalize the sales of the Tang series, together with the bigger Da Tang (Great Tang).

The new Tang is a five-seat mid-to-large SUV that will go on sale at some point during the fourth quarter of this year, so from October to December. It's 5,045 mm long, 1,980 mm wide, 1,760 mm tall, and has a 2,950 mm wheelbase.

It uses BYD's second-generation Blade battery, with two options: 88.6 kWh and 105.7 kWh. The range varies by configuration, it is at least 730 km and at most 850 km, obviously using the CLTC cycle, which as always you should keep in mind is by far the most optimistic one out there.

BYD ‘assessing’ Dolphin G PHEV hatch for SA

Chinese brand BYD has confirmed it is “assessing” the new Dolphin G – a model that would stand as the local market’s only PHEV hatchback – for South Africa…

BYD Auto South Africa has confirmed to Cars.co.za that it is “assessing” the new Dolphin G DM-i for the local market, suggesting there might be a place in Mzansi for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) hatchback.

SA’s new-vehicle market currently features precisely zero PHEV hatches, with Chinese crossovers dominating the lower end of the broader plug-in hybrid market. Should the Dolphin G receive the green light, it could potentially launch as the country’s most affordable PHEV – a crown currently held by BYD’s Atto 2 Comfort DM-i (R449 900).

Mark Handley, BYD Auto South Africa’s Director of Commercial Operations, told Cars.co.za that he had “certainly noticed the Dolphin G that has been launched in quite a few markets in Europe”.

“It has a couple of battery options and a couple of trim options,” Handley told us, referencing the 2 battery capacities available in Europe and adding that the vehicle has “lots of electric range and lots of total range”.

Aah man this colour makes me nostalgic for 2010 and the old Ford Focus ST. We need more cars in bright colours.

As someone that drove an orange car for 13 years, and before that a turquoise car for about 6 years, I completely agree.

Modern cars look so bland in their non-descript white, silver, grey.
 
2027 BYD Mako hybrid bakkie revealed

BYD has revealed the Mako, a plug-in hybrid double-cab bakkie positioned below the Shark 6.

BYD has previewed the Mako PHEV (plug-in hybrid) bakkie in prototype format. Penned in for production at the Chinese automaker’s Camaçari plant in Bahia, Brazil – following initial units being sourced from China – the Mako will be exclusive to the Brazilian market, with no word yet wether it will be introduced to other countries, including South Africa.

Positioned below the Shark 6 – evaluated for a road test in the August 2025 issue of CAR magazine – in BYD’s pickup portfolio, the Mako is underpinned by the ‘Song Plus’ architecture. According to CarNewsChina, the Mako is “approximately 4.8 metres long”, which makes it around 650 mm shorter than the Shark 6.

The Chinese publication also reported that the Mako’s PHEV powertrain will comprise a 73 kW/122 N.m 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine and a single electric motor. The setup produces combined power and torque outputs of 166 kW and 400 N.m. Power will be delivered to the front wheels via a DHT (dedicated hybrid transmission), with a four-wheel drivetrain expected to be introduced in the future.
