The BYD (EV) Thread

The blocky BYD E-VALI van is here to take on the Transit

BYD moves into the light commercial vehicle game with a 335bhp all-electric van

A new player is about to enter the hotly contested light commercial vehicle game in Europe. Yep, BYD has just unveiled the E-VALI van – a rival for movers like the Ford E-Transit and Renault Master E-Tech.

Because of course, the E-VALI is powered by electricity. There’s a cobalt-free 80.64kWh battery that should provide a range of between 137 and 155 miles, and you’ll be able to spec a single-motor, rear-wheel drive variant with 201bhp or a twin-motor, all-wheel drive unit with 335bhp.

Worth noting that it’ll fast charge at an impressive 188kW too, so a 10 to 80 per cent top up takes around 30 minutes. Oh, and a heat pump is standard fit.

We’re told the E-VALI will come in two sizes, with the smaller of the two 5,995mm in length and the larger 6,995mm. You’ll get 13.9m³ of cargo volume in the former and 17.9m³ in the latter. Depending on size there will also be a max payload of 1,450kg.

BYD exceeds 1 million EV sales in 2024, after record-breaking August performance

China's electric vehicle powerhouse BYD has sailed past 1 million EV sales in 2024, following an exceptional August performance. This cements BYD's leading position in the EV market.

The company reported selling a staggering 373,082 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in August, including both plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and all-electric vehicles. This remarkable figure eclipses BYD's previous record of 342,383 NEVs set in July, marking the third consecutive month of record-breaking NEV sales.

Plug-in hybrids played a significant role in this growth, with 222,384 units sold in August, a substantial 73% increase compared to August 2023. This marks the sixth month in a row of record PHEV sales for BYD. As of August 2024, BYD has sold over 1.3 million PHEVs, a 43% increase from the approximately 886,000 sold in the same period last year.

While PHEVs are driving much of the growth, BYD's all-electric vehicle sales also remain strong. The company sold 148,470 EVs last month, a modest 2% increase year-over-year but a notable 15% increase from July. This growth was sufficient to propel BYD past the 1 million EV sales milestone for 2024.

BYD recalls 100k Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs due to safety hazard

BYD has issued a recall on two of its models due to fire hazard - the Dolphin and the Yuan Plus. The recall affects vehicles sold in China and produced between February 4, 2023 and December 26, 2023 as well as some Yuan Plus units that rolled out of the factory between November 2, 2022 and June 19, 2023. Rhe issue doesn't affect overseas version of the Yuan Plus known as Atto 3.

The recall includes approximately 96,714 vehicles and owners are contacted via email, WeChat and phone calls. BYD has even set up a hotline specifically for the recalls. This is BYD's biggest recall to date and the company clearly intends to handle it well.
