BYD Sealion 5 Confirmed for SA

BYD has announced the Sealion 5 is en route to South Africa, with the Chinese automaker revealing when it will arrive in our market.

Built on the firm’s DM-i (Dual Mode intelligence) platform, the Sealion 5’s PHEV powertrain pairs a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with a single electric motor for a combined system output of 145 kW and 300 N.m of torque. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Overseas, the Sealion 5 is available with the choice of two battery options: 12 kWh and an 18.3 kWh – the former and latter offering emissions-free operating ranges of 61 km and 94 km when fully charged, respectively. The Shenzhen brand claims a combined average fuel consumption of 1.4 L/100 km when the battery is fully charged.

The Sealion 5 measures 4 738 mm in length and 1 860 mm in width – dimensions comparable to that of the Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV.

BYD Sealion 5 SA Launch Date

BYD has confirmed the Sealion 5 will officially launch in SA in November 2025, with pricing and specifications unveiled when it makes its local debut.

BYD hits a red light with Q3 profits dipping, but global push accelerates

The world's largest maker of electric cars just showed a rare sign of vulnerability. After years of unstoppable growth, BYD reported that its third-quarter profit and revenue actually decreased compared to the same period last year. But for anyone counting BYD out, its nine-month performance and massive global expansion tell a much different story.

Let's look at the rough patch first. In the third quarter of 2025, BYD's revenue fell by 3.05 percent year-on-year, landing at €23.39 billion. Net income took a bigger hit, dropping 32.60 percent to €0.94 billion. This was the company's second straight quarter of year-on-year profit decline with BYD's sales of "new energy" vehicles (NEVs) in Q3 slipping by 1.82 percent to 1.11 million units.

This is the first time its sales have shrunk, year-over-year, since 2021. The main reason? Intense competition from rivals like Geely Auto, which is launching new models at aggressive prices in China. It seems giving everyone a discount eats into profits. Who knew?

Pulling back from the three-month snapshot reveals a much healthier picture for the EV giant. For the first nine months of 2025, BYD's total revenue set a new record, climbing 13 percent to €67.86 billion. The Q3 profit might have been down from last year, but it was actually up 23 percent from the previous quarter (Q2 2025), showing a strong rebound. The overall vehicle sales for the first nine months are up 18.64 percent, hitting 3.26 million units, putting BYD on track to get close to its ambitious 4.6 million-unit annual target.

BYD Small Bakkie Coming Soon

Patent images show a BYD small bakkie will be revealed soon, positioned under the Shark 6. Here’s what we know so far.

- Smaller bakkie being planned for European introduction by BYD
- Positioned under the Shark 6
- Should retain the plug-in hybrid powertrain

The BYD Shark 6 has been quite the success story for the Chinese new-energy vehicle brand. Granted, BYD doesn’t share its sales figures locally but when you see one in traffic, it’s highly likely that it will be a Shark 6 double-cab bakkie. Some of our dealer friends have said that demand outstrips supply…

It’s not just locally either as other bakkie-obsessed markets have shown considerable interest in the Shark 6. But, what if you wanted something smaller? According to CarNewsChina, the BYD small bakkie will have its global debut before the end of 2025.

The images you see here are straight from the European Union’s Intellectual Property Office, which gives you a clue about where the BYD small bakkie will be sold. The source article went on to predict that this BYD bakkie will be riding on a monocoque setup, as opposed to a ladderframe chassis – you know, the default platform for 99% of ever bakkie in South Africa.

Going the monocoque route will mean compromised offroad capability, but the reality is that on-road refinement will be superior. We expect this new small bakkie to use BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology, combining electric motors with an internal combustion engine.
