BYD axes spinning touchscreens in push for smoother apps

Rotating displays were a headline feature at BYD's European launch, but they compromise app integration

BYD will stop using rotating touchscreens as it ramps up the use of third-party apps and platforms in its cars.

Rotating touchscreens were a headline feature of BYDs during the initial phase of the Chinese brand's European roll-out, serving as a means of differentiating its interiors from those of similarly minimalist rivals. They were fitted as standard right across the range, down to the £18k Dolphin Surf hatchback.

BYD said the ability to spin the screen 90deg made it easier to use while stationary or moving - with portrait orientation giving a better view ahead in navigation mode, for example, and landscape orientation making it easier for occupants to access the whole screen while stationary.

But now the firm is discontinuing one of its most distinguishing features in a bid to better integrate the apps that most of its customers use day to day.

The new Atto 2 crossover is the first BYD to arrive with its 12.4in screen locked in landscape mode, and the spinning function will be phased out of the other models in the line-up from now.

So I went... I really like the Seal  not sure between this and the i4 though which I'd buy if I had a bar BUT I am hoping that they'll start giving some decent deals OR discounts soon.

On the Dolphin Surf, if you have a bigger car and just need a car to go to work and take the kids to school then it's a good buy. At R400k it's a decent buy.

Both of the above though need you to have some sort of solar at home though.

If I had the money, I'd get the Seal. Just to dip my toes into Electric I'd give the Surf a really good look at R299k which we might get if people go and test drive these so we have demo's :D.

Dealer was quiet which is odd since they are literally opposite Clearwater mall and next to a Goldwagen but yeah.

My hope is fading:

Watch out Porsche: BYD’s latest supercar is coming to the UK

Premium subbrand Denza will bring a bewinged two-door supercar to our shores next year

Back in April at the Shanghai Auto Show, BYD’s posh subbrand Denza (not to be confused with its ultra-posh subbrand Yangwang) unveiled a two-door supercar concept with a massive wing.

And now we have exciting news, because BYD’s VP Stella Li has confirmed that a production version is actually coming to the UK!

You see, Denza already has plans to launch on our shores in Spring 2026 with the Porsche Taycan-rivalling Z9 GT, and the sports car (which was actually called the Z at the Shanghai show) will follow shortly after.

“We would like to invite you to Goodwood Festival of Speed next year to experience the Denza Z,” said Li. “The powertrain is confidential for now, but you are invited and you will have a chance to experience this car.”

Reckon Porsche, Aston and McLaren should be running scared? We wouldn’t expect the Z to have the 2,978bhp powertrain of the record-setting Yangwang U9 Xtreme, but the Z9 GT does get a tri-motor setup with 952bhp and 848lb ft of torque. Still fairly nippy, then.

“Our technology is ‘wow’,” says Li. “The Z9 GT has made a big impact in China.

“When other brands launch a new premium car, they just make the engines more powerful. There’s no revolution in that.”
