The BYD (EV) Thread

I finally gave in, could not wait any longer for the BYD Denza, bought a T2 iDM.
Busy having it PPF wrapped now, hopefully done soon spoke to a contact at Jetour HQ and they said the G700 should be here Q2 2027. so I will probably buy that or trade the T2 in on it, if the BYD hasnt come yet
Congrats, you came from a high end X3 I think? Which gen?

Happy so far, any regrets or annoyances etc

Guys charging lekker down south!

Came from an X3m40i
The tech in this car is far superior, pull of is super quick, not like the BM but it does weight about 2.2 tons, there are some things that I dont like but for 800k vs the replacement of the bmw for about 1.8 mill, well its expected, I must have replaced abot 15 tyres in 3 years with the BM, at about 7k a tyres, do the maths, these cars are not designed for our roads and the petrol? Was probably putting in R500 every 3 or 4 days.

?

Does the aircon work properly?

Does it show outside temp?

Does it show ave consumption for longer than 50km?

None of the chery group phev's show more 50km consumption on trip computer, you can pull additional info on the new energy menu though
Same with BYD, only shows "last 50km" and that's it no more info afaik. How stupid is that.

The one thing I cannot understand it, the passenger seat cannot go up or down, the Chinese cars dont have them, I am convinced every one of these car manufacturers are doing the same thing, they have developed the engines, all the same, the batteries too, they have all colluded together and designed the basics, then each company can just add on their own touches on top of the platform. The sound system is crystal clear but it needs to be able to go louder, another issue. The driver and passanger seat on the iDM dont have the folding "ears" that sort of wrap around your sides of your head. Not a deal breaker.

The tank is big, 70L but am getting around 6.9 to 7.9 L/100 coming from the BMW its fantastic and I am driving for free around town, using solar to charge my battery every 2 days. Waiting for my free fast charger though so that will help.
One thing I am amazed at, the steering is incrdible, so smooth, on a car that size I would have expected it to be more "rough".
I also find it difficult to get out the car :D you need long legs or you must use the handle provided.
I have also found that the Chinese use inferiror paint techniques apparantly, but have had the car treated and did a full PPF wrap, waiting for hat to be completed.

where is the new energy menu?
In that order you should be get the additional stats. Though not sure if chery based cars has this option

Think in the t2 this menu is available if you swipe from to top to bottom to access the quick menu options.

Howdy. Does anyone know what the latest OTA update version is for the BYD Dolphin? I bought one last week but when I try do a software update, it says OTA version 1.0 is the latest version (system version 13.1.32.2510231.1). I see that 2.2.0 OTA is available in Europe. Is South Africa behind or is my car not updating for some reason?

Do we get OTA updates in SA? Can they afford the data fees?

BYD claims assisted driving slashes accident rates by over 80%

During a presentation at the 13th Intelligent Connected Vehicle Technology Annual Conference in Shanghai, BYD revealed that its active driver-assistance technologies improve road safety by a huge margin. For a global market increasingly interested in EVs, these statistics offer a rare, data-driven look at how software affects daily driving.

According to Yang Dongsheng, head of the Automotive New Technology Research Institute, BYD expanded its smart driving software aggressively in early 2025. Level 2 assisted driving systems are standard across almost all passenger electric cars the manufacturer builds - the technology runs on nearly 3 million vehicles globally, covering more than 60 distinct models.

The real-world data shows a massive drop in major traffic collisions. BYD calculates its serious accident rate by measuring how often airbags deploy every 10 million kilometers. Based on this metric, vehicles using the brand's smart driving software experience only one-sixth of the severe accidents reported by purely human drivers.

Drivers are heavily using these automated features. Data from the company shows that navigation-assisted driving sees an activation rate of more than 50%. Parking assistance is even more popular, with customers turning it on for 86% of their parking attempts. This specific parking system practically eliminates low-speed mishaps, reducing body scratches and small fender benders to roughly one-fiftieth of traditional driving rates - that's a 98% drop.

A large portion of this performance stems from what the automaker calls its Xuanji Architecture. Instead of running separate computers for entertainment, motor control, and safety, this platform unifies the electronic brains and electrification hardware into one single system. The car uses onboard physical AI models to predict potential hazards on the road and calculate defensive maneuvers before a human can react.

To catch objects that normal cameras might miss, the vehicles combine visual software with roof-mounted LiDAR sensors. This setup maps out hollow or suspended obstacles, which is especially useful during tight parking scenarios. On the software side, the manufacturer feeds 190 million kilometers of daily driving data into a cloud simulator, allowing engineers to update the vehicle algorithms every three days.

The engineering team focuses heavily on extreme weather and dangerous road conditions. During high-speed tire blowouts, rain, snow, or muddy roads, the integrated platform coordinates the electric motors and chassis together. If a tire blows out, the system can stabilize the vehicle in just 200 milliseconds. BYD validation teams have successfully tested this blowout stability at speeds exceeding 200 km/h on dedicated physical proving grounds.

This news comes right before a dedicated intelligent-driving strategy event on May 28, where industry analysts expect BYD to reveal updates to its "God's Eye" safety system. This ecosystem includes parking-assistance program that the company first launched back in July 2025.
