I made a quick spaghetti and mince meal and the Italian style diced tomatos can got me thinking.

Canned food good or bad for you?

Honestly I never use fresh tomatoes to cook with anymore I love the canned once or the tomato puree cans or sachets. I took a slow stroll through the canned food section in PicknPay and I'm amazed at what is on offer. Endless variety of foods on offer all in cans that does not gef spoiled as fast as the fresh veg.

What do you guys think? Good bad and what canned food is a must for your grocery shopping each month?

Have not tried canned meals so can't comment on the taste.
Taste could be acceptable but the preservatives can't be healthy if you going to have it often

Sometimes the problems with canned is the amount of salt that's in there. I loved a decent tinned fish or even a can of curried veg. But man it's got salt in it.

For me I do like to cook with canned food. Cooking pasta and using the chopped tomatoes or cooking a curry and using canned butter beans.

There is a massive variety of canned foods a isle I was always avoid because of the myth that canned food is bad for you...

Nothing wrong with some of them. Makes life easier. Also who would survive oppiekoppi without them?

Choose the foods in cans to which you would have anyway added salt to.

Like chopped tomatoes. If you used fresh tomatoes you would have added salt. With canned tomatoes you can just leave the salt. Problem solved.

I'm a 1971 model
Eat canned foods every week in my meals
Still alive
No signs of problems
Prostate is still good, penis still works, etc
The rule of thumb is do not buy a dented tin can of food from the shelf in supermarket, can't remember why, but apparently if you do you will get diseases of some sort, and might die soon before even paying for it

It's the BPA epoxy resins from the lining of the can that is the most concerning.

Canned food is cooked at high temperatures so the nutritional content is lacking.

The salt, sugar and preservative levels are definitely something to watch.

Definitely not something you want to be eating daily.

aaaah good answer, how old are you ?

Well I did some googling and getting a lot of mixed results about canned food actually containing preservatives so yeah I'm still not convinced it's worse than fresh produce which we know gets grown in bulk and sprayed with God knows what anyways.

For a quick meal, tinned meats are great. I'd still use fresh veggies though. Just my preference.

I like tinned pilchards for a quick chutney, and everybody eats tinned tuna with fresh veggies on toast.

One thing that I can't find on our shelves is tinned mutton. Similar to tinned beef. Very popular in Fiji apparently. I'd like to try it out.

And this added salt issue. You would add salt to whatever you are cooking anyway, so maybe just taste the food before and see if you need to add extra when using canned food.

It was proven about 20 or 30 years ago when they dug up old graves to look inside again of said deaths and stuff they realised the skin was more preserved than say 50yrs ago.
Only conclusion was all the preservatives we eat in food.
who gives a ffff bru, you only live once, enjoy your stay on Planet Earth
go forth and eat those tins :)
