I've got two different types of chilli already growing in little pots, ready to be transplanted into a bigger container with time to fruit before winter. If you're keen to try a hotter chilli than what you'd usually find in shops here - give the 7-Pot a go.

7-Pot Brain Strain
(Hot)
Pimento de Padron (Mild)

I have 5 of the 7-Pot Brain and 3 of the Pimento de Padron. If anyone is interested just let me know - you can collect tomorrow in Rondebosch or else during the week in Observatory.

I can perhaps collect tomorrow some. Will talk to wife and see, we are coming into cpt but unsure of schedule.

How long would it take for you to drive to Johannesburg to drop some plants off?

How did you grow the 7 pot chilli? Trying to grow some
They need a fair amount of warmth to germinate. Started the seeds off in soil in small black seed trays wrapped in clingwrap and gave them plenty of sun. Clingwrap helps keep the warmth in.

Once they'd grown and there were true leaves the plants were moved into those small pots filled with peat moss with a small amount of food/fertilizer added. That's what you're seeing above. The critical part is the warmth to germinate - they're pretty pedantic about it :).

We're busy with some Ethiopian Brown and only about two of the six have made it to the leafing stage & they're supposedly easier to grow than the 7-Pot. But then the more you plant from your own fruits they seem to do much better in successive generations. That first grow can often be tricky.

I still have one of each if anyone would like to take them.

I'm tempted, but not sure when I will be passing that way. Maybe Friday, if that works for you?
Although I am currently growing 7 different types of chilli... The other half just shakes his head every time I buy another one.

You guys do know we now want weekly updates on how the little plants are adapting to their new homes ... :p

Hi Saor
Planted some seeds from the Spar's red thai chillies, would love to add your guys to my herb garden :)
Let me know if still available and I will swing by and collect from you.

@AvatarS: Let me know if you want to collect the plants in Observatory on Friday (09:00-15:00), else I'm gonna let berghie take 'em.

@bergie: Just waiting for AvatarS to respond :).

Let bergie have first pick, and I'll catch the next round of giveaways :)

I haven't heard back from them since sending a pm. These need to go today so if anyone would like to collect in Obs - first person to confirm they can collect can have them. Else we can do this again next year :).

Question regarding the seeds, is it absolutely crucial to let them dry before you plant them? I planted some chilli seeds that I depitted a two weeks ago and so far nothing has come up yet. I saved half the seeds to let them dry out, so how long must I wait before they're ready to be planted?

Also, how long do they generally take to germinate?

I bought a bunch of chillis from food lovers and took their seeds out to dry. I've scrubbed with dettol, handy andy and Sunlight multiple times now and it still burns like a mufugga when I touch my tottie to piss. Yowzah!

Rub your hands with oil (preferably coconut) when handling hot chilli. Er, I think it should work elsewhere too :p
