Been getting a lot of this message lately: The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

Predominantly I get it from the search site on www.ancestry.co.uk, but today picking it from sourceforge.net as well.

Being on leave (at last) and having some time I thought it a good idea to catch up on some of the family research but I have not made any progress at all! Initially I thought it may be related to the vodacom site I work off since it only has GPRS. On Saturday I visited a friend with iBurst and this worked fine. On Monday I ventured out with the laptop and 3G card, but still no luck. I have tried working through transparent proxies world-wide - actually had some luck one evening via a server in Taiwan, but not since!

Could this problem be related to the transparent vodacom proxy - I recall a thread on this not too long ago? Anyone else picking up this type of problem?

Call 155 and ask to be Provisioned for the internetvpn APN, as well as the instructions for your modem's dashboard s/w for switching to the [searchforum]internetvpn APN[/searchforum].

Thanks IC - got this all done and now connected via internetvpn. Sourceforge working great now but ancestry still a no go! To make matters worse I got 3 resets just trying to log into the forum?!

Just to double-check that you're on the internetvpn, and not the internet APN [default], do an ipconfig from a Command Prompt in Windoze, and then copy & paste the Vodacom-specific connection details in a code block, like so: [noparse]
Code:
output from ipconfig here
[/noparse]

Here it is...

Code:
Windows IP Configuration

PPP adapter Voda VPN:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 196.46.173.32
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 196.46.173.32

It's the internetvpn apn. Not sure why you're getting resets. Which browser are you using?

Using Firefox 2.0.0.11. I get the same effect using IE6. Get this on desktop working to local tower (gprs only) via dedicated gprs modem and on laptop in 3G area with 3G card.

A slight diversion from the topic - I notice that when using the internetvpn APN that auto-disconnect pops up regularly thinking that the connection has been idle. It is set at 20 mins at the moment and religiously every 20mins it asks me if I want to disconnect because the connection has been idle fo 20mins...!? This has not happened using internet APN.

@v3g, sounds like ancestry.co.uk needs to be examined for a bypass operation.

Perhaps you guys want to try it and see if you get the same effect or if it is peculiar to me?

Try this:

www.ancestry.co.uk
Select <search>
On search window select <advanced search>
Make sure <Exact matches only> is checked
Type in given name: Joseph, surname: Thorne, Birth year 1845
<search>
You should now get a summary list
Select <1881 England Census> or any other one without a padlock
This is where I get the reset - you should actually get a list of entries.

lets see what happens.....

I can get to the reset point without being logged, but maybe they recognise my pc. I will pm a login that you can use...
Been trying, also using Firefox 2.0.0.11, also found that I had to temporarily allow various domains in NoScript - in particular mfcreative.com affects the advanced search page [when not logged in], just registered a "free account" in order to see the results from the advanced search - BTW I'm using SAIX-ADSL ATM, and I don't get a reset from ancestry.co.uk.

Are there some settings I must tweak?

OR, does this at least point to the problem being somewhere on the Vodacom network - (this confirms my experience on Sat when using iBurst!)
If so, is the bypass op in order?

It's difficult to say where the reset is coming from - especially since I haven't experienced it on ADSL, and cannot test it right now on HSDPA, IMO Vodacom might need to do a bypass operation for ancestry.co.uk, but switching to the internetvpn really should have solved the problem.

Ok, lets see if v3g has a comment on this.....? I assume him will be back in the loop later!
Meanwhile, I suggest that you email [email protected] with all the relevant details including your Data SIM Card's number and your contact details - this will get the problem logged and hopefully assigned to the relevant department, once you have a reference number you can pass that on to v3g...

Got the ref from Vodacom, so I will pm this on to v3g.

I subsequently found out that the error associated with this problem is 10054 - WSAECONNRESET. One bit of research revealed the following:

Code:
Error: "#10054" Message - "An existing connection was forcibly closed by
the remote host." - Winsock Error code 10054 (WSAECONNRESET)
indicates a "Connection reset". This can happen if a sockets client (which
includes SPX) is actively sending or receiving data, and the network
connection is lost. Typical examples of this could be: someone logging out
incorrectly by powering off their computer in the middle of a transmission,
or the network cable becoming disconnected, etc.

Is there some sort of corruption in the connection to the server - but then why does this happen consistently? Oh well, lets see what the vodacom investigation reveals!

Just in case, try clearing the cache in Firefox, and delete any cookies associated with ancestry.co.uk and the other domains that show up in NoScript - there could be a lingering problem associated with the internet APN that is cached in Firefox and reappears when it shouldn't using the internetvpn APN.
