The Craft Beer Thread

I hate IPA's....

Craft beers are generally too hoppy but the motto of every IPA is "Add hops", but what about other flavours, nope, add hops, but but but, it's a craft IPA dammit ADD HOPS!!!!

Generalise much? Have you never enjoyed one? I've had bad ones and some of my favourites are IPA's... It is such a varied style. Can't paint them all with the same hoppy brush.

I've only had Triggerfish on tap @ Triggerfish... Enjoyed it. Think I must get some bottles for the weekend. Going to be very thirsty Sunday, after the CCT MTB race :)

If your intended shopping location is Roeland street and you're feeling flush grab the triggerfish black marlin. Crazy stout.

Not one, and yes I've tried quite a few. Simply too hoppy for me. The majority flavour of true IPA's is hops, I don't like it.

Last I was there at the brewery only, but it's a good excuse for a weekend getaway.

Thanks

Actually now this interests me.

For Dr Melanie Nieuwoudt her doctoral studies on beer brewing are much more than just an academic matter. She will be putting the knowledge she has gained over the past four years into practice by opening a micro-brewery in the Cederberg on the Nieuwoudt family farm, Kromrivier.

Hi all,

Just started with my first all-grain homebrew. I'm currently doing BIAB (Brew in a bag) and was wondering which is the most economical method of heating?

Electricity - We're a direct Eskom customer. I'm not sure what the per unit cost is or if we're in certain brackets but I'll find out. Can anyone advise on the on the kWh consumption to heat say 50l of water to 70 degrees, and then the kWh consumption of a 1 hour boil?

Gas - Based on this. If using two burners it works out to roughly 0,280kg per hour (assuming that figure is max burn?). Can anyone advise how long it takes to heat 50l of water and then boil as above using two burners? - it will help me calculate the total cost.

The plan is to get stainless steel HLT and mash tun in the future and I suspect Eskom will work out cheaper so I'll probably use that as a primary and then utilize gas as a backup.

Thanks.

The Clarens beer fest was awesome - aside from the apocalyptic rain and a stomach bug on Friday afternoon.

This year was my second year there - and will definitely be heading that way again next year.

Had a really interesting beer at Honingklip called KlipVis yesterday.

It's a collaboration between Honingklip and Triggerfish. It's the Honingklip Trippel recipe with the bitterness of the Triggerfish Titan Imperial IPA. 9.6% alc/vol.

Unfortunately they had didn't have any bottles for me to take home.
Look out for it at the SouthYeasters Festival this Sunday.

I had one of those at the Clarens beer fest - proper tasty beer.

It was also nice that there wasn't lots of heat from the booze - I find with a lot of higher ABV belgian beers that the alcohol heat overpowers any of the other flavours in the beer.

had a couple of Copperlakes over the weekend, not too shabby at all
