The Craft Beer Thread

When does a craft beer stop being a craft beer?

The yank definition is very laid out:

An American craft brewer is small, independent and traditional.

Independent Craft Brewer Seal

Small
Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to the rules of alternating proprietorships.

Independent
Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.

Traditional
A brewer that has a majority of its total beverage alcohol volume in beers whose flavor derives from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients and their fermentation. Flavored malt beverages (FMBs) are not considered beers.

Then you've got CAMRA in the UK, they don't really have "craft" but cask ales are about their equivalent.

I'm sure there's something similar in Gemany.

In SA the term "craft" is basically meaningless.

Looks like it. Thanks for buying, Morkhans!

Yup ODO special. Got some of the other beers that were also on offer, but probably wouldn't have bought if harambe hadn't made an appearance

Thanks this was my thinking too, looks like craft gets thrown around alot lately

like Scott pointed out doesn't seem to be any standard in SA to determine this or maybe its not wildly published.

The definition of craft that I like is that there is an individual brewer who is still associated with the production of the beers. Like Wolfgang at CBC for example, or Steve Gilroy at Gilroy's (to cite two very differently sized operations).

Talking about Gilroy's, where can one find their brews in stores in PTA? I can't find them anywhere anymore :(

I need to put my face under wherever serves this on tap one day.

^ At the brewery ;)

We went to the Wild Clover restaurant on Saturday as it has a nice play area for the kids. To our shock they did not have their own beer there. Said something with not right with the gas or a keg or something. They also did not sell it per bottle so I had to walk back to the brewery and buy some bottles and bring it back to the restaurant. Never had this issue before. I hope they fix it soon.
