There are a few experimental SAB hop cultivars that are very sought after by local brewers, but generally it's the common SAB hops (S. Promise, PIH blend etc.) that are used just for bittering. I'd say the majority of flavour and aroma hops being used in the SA craft industry is imported.

Very informative... With the new ones S.Passion & the incredible new Aroma ones i'm sure things will change don't you think? I see a beautiful incredible beer drinking summer on the horizon for South Africans. Maybe even in time for the world cup? And blerrie proudly SA as well?

In the homebrewing I've done I haven't been too impressed with the SAB hops that I have tried the experimental J17 hop is ok - but the yank varieties are better - imo.

they likely have no maize added like SAB beers.

Only two brands come to mind that use maize Millers and another which i'm not sure so won't name. So I wouldn't generally say they use maize. Again i'm no expert but that's just what i'm aware of am I wrong?

Have a look at the label of any SAB beer...

J17 smells incredible... come on!!! please please do something amazing with it. I've heard the yanks want it as well so i'm sure more "drinking" pleasure can be extracted

The Devil's Peak English Ale is a bland and uninteresting beer - not sure if the bottle I had last night was just quite old or that's how the beer is.

Was expecting more malty backbone - but it came through quite watery.

I remember one beer tasting session when I was still in the beer business, colleague on the panel sniffed and took a taste of a beer and then said "this beer is catty"

We all looked at him and he sniffed and tasted again and then said "yes, definitely tastes like cats piss"

"Catty" stuck as a descriptor after that

On a related note I've heard that some people think Simcoe tastes like cat piss - luckily I'm not one of them - really rather enjoy the flavour of Simcoe.

Nice strong alc taste but a little too carbonated for what I felt like right now. Got that very fine & foamy carbonation that fills your mouth with every swig.
