Plato calls for protests

Cape Town - The mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, has called on Makhaza residents in Khayelitsha to burn tyres and protest against the ANC Youth League for destroying toilet enclosures last week.

"I want to throw it back at the community... that you need to tell those rude hooligans, those thugs, that you must march and burn tyres against those hooligans," Plato said at a press conference at his offices in Cape Town.

"What is happening now is that the Youth League is taking decisions on the part of the community without the community having any say in it."

Toilets removed

Plato said the unenclosed toilets in Makhaza were removed on Monday morning. They would be replaced once residents had built enclosures themselves.

"We are willing to go back and reinstall the toilets as soon the community reaches an agreement with the Youth League."

Plato said charges were laid against the ANCYL last week for destruction of city property.

"We are also looking at the Youth League's call to make the City of Cape Town ungovernable, and so we are looking at a charge of inciting violence."

He said the case was with detectives. "The detectives and officials have it in hand."

Plato said the ANC's criticism of its youth body was "too little, too late".

"The ANC leadership did not respond immediately to the actions of their cadres. It is a week too late. Their actions were not enough. The damage has been done."

Agreement

Plato said the city had reached an agreement with residents and the ANCYL that it would install the toilets once the enclosures had been built. This had been done in other parts of Khayelitsha with great success.

"In 2007, the city negotiated an agreement that residents would contribute to the project by building enclosures around the toilets themselves," Plato said.

Of the 1 316 toilets provided in terms of this agreement, 1 265 were properly enclosed by residents. The remaining 51 were not.

"Given that the city has been prevented from building the remaining enclosures, we have resolved to temporarily remove the toilets until appropriate enclosures have been built."

Plato said the city had to remove 65 toilets on Monday morning. He said this was because some of the residents in Makhaza had sided with the ANCYL and broke down more enclosures.

;)

To the DA groupies on the forum. Explanation please.

Why should Cape Town build new toilets if the ANCYL is just going to bust them up again? Let Makhaza residents build their own enclosures first then ask for the new toilets after they sort out their differences with the ANCYL. Sounds Fair to me.

Im dissapointed. The replies so far smacks of double standards. The DA can call for the destruction of property but the ANCYL not?

Violence and destructive behaviour is not DA policy. It really is as simple as that.

I can only assume that Plato is not speaking on behalf of the DA because Zille would eat him alive for that. I know assumptions are generally the mother of all fsck-ups but we'll go ahead and stick that in your little pipe for now until we can firmly pin this on the DA, shall we?

Wait - marching and burning tyres is now an act of violence? And suggesting they do so qualifies as incitement? What are you smoking?

Really pathetic behaviour. This idiot must retract his statement and apologize or lose his job.

Now we'll see if Zille practices what she preaches.

I'd say it does. They'll not only destroying tyres but other items as well. Who's going to pay to clean up the mess?

Also tensions will be drastically raised and things could easily get out of control. Again the police will have to deal with this when they should be catching criminals.

The destruction of what property? The tyres? You're kidding, right?

I'm interested to see what she says as well. Especially as it seems the cops ended up having to fire rubber bullets at the protestors.

Agreed just because the ANC act like a bunch of savages does not mean the DA should act the same way.

His comments are stupid, yes. But inciting violence? Nope, I think not...

DJ when you call for something like this, regardless of colour, race or country mob mentality leans towards violence.

If the shyte does fly the DA would have organized a violent protest, Sounds like a plan waiting to go very wrong.

I agree. DA should not stoop to the ANC/YL level. That is exactly the opposite of what I voted for!

Peaceful and legal protest (no burning of tyres, etc) I'm all for. Acting like and endorsing the exact same hooligans and hooliganism you're angry at is humiliating to those who voted you in hoping for a better South Africa. Grow up.

Yep, this is stupid. You do not fight anarchists with more anarchy. Besides, DA, think of the pollution! :p

Refuse to ever provide services to any and every person/group guilty of the toilet wall smashing incident, unless they pay for any and all damages. The same for any strikers. No vehicle licensing, no business licensing, etc. No processing of any paperwork by the province. Nothing. Pay as as the group responsible or as an individual responsible.

Place more hidden cameras all over the city. Pay for the people monitoring, from damages paid for by those responsible.

Since the violence by unions lately, even they have to place a huge deposit from now on, before any march/protest. Money...Make them think twice before they risk losing it.
