The DataDot Asset Identification Kit

Where, how much? The check price button on the article does not help at all. Google search reveals a website that has no pricing information.

I found this http://www.datadotdna.co.za/, which reckons the "home asset kit" is worth R700. (Side note: how are these going to reduce your chance of hijacking or theft? The whole point is that thieves can't even see them no? They are so that the owner can be identified, not a preventative measure.)

It would be nice if articles like this could actually tell us where we can get these things.

The only problem with using these on your laptop etc. is if you decide to sell it later, you'll have to try scrape these things off.

My car has them apparently. Seems to be something Nissan and quite a few other car manufacturers are doing. From what I can tell it appears they spray them inside the engine compartment - so would be really difficult to remove them all.

I would guess the sticker advertising the vehicle is micro dotted is the deterrent.

I wondered if there was something like that (sticker), hopefully it's actually noticeable? I wonder if they give stickers to put on your camera, laptop etc? :p

My Nissan bakkie has a small sticker on the back window, not noticeable at all.
Criminals are not stupid though, I'm sure they know which vehicles are likely to have them.

This is a little off topic, but it has been bothering me for ages, you know when you read something the opening plot is illustrating a problem? Well I want eat **** and die when they say "Enter xxxxxx; " where xxxxxx is the product that solves it.

Why not say "That's why xxxxxx was developed" or "Using xxxxxx can solve this" or "The answers is xxxxxxx". Please not Enter. That is something you do when you go into a building or the key you press to go to a new line. Using it in a sense like "Enter DataDot;" is so old and formal it just makes me want to break something.

Well, maybe its just me.

Useful if you expect to have stolen goods recovered and if you want them back after they are recovered. As much as we hate crime in SA, people are more concerned with replacing hardware under insurance claims than having them recovered - which is sad considering it doesn't help the situation. I imagine it's easier for the cops too...

For sure. Cops couldnt be bothered to track down the owners. I had a car stolen back in 2003. Once i had bought a brand new car to replace it, about 2 months later I get a call from a guy affiliated with the insurance company who scouts out police holding yards. He tells me my stolen car is sitting at Claremont police station and that I should go and verify that it is mine. I go check it out and there is my car, minus a petrol cap. I go and find out how long has the car been sitting there and I could not believe my eyes and ears because the car was found 3 days after it was stolen and the freakin SAPS could not even lift a lazy a$$ finger to pick up the phone and track me down? I spent 140k on a new car and they stole my old car for some petrol and a petrol cap?

Licence plates and everything was intact, so if they too lazy (or overworked) to even look up who the car belongs to based on that, I don't see them looking for microdots either :(
