The difference between DStv HD and Netflix HD

Trying to stream the rugby using the DSTv app on ATV4k with a gigabit fibre and it looks like ****.

**** you DSTv.

Busy watching the rugga on my pc thru the app. 1080i looks kak. And quality drops every now and again. Definitely not comparable to 1080p.

Even with 1080i being half the bandwidth of 'p' they still can't give you a constant quality service. Useless is useless.

The app is not 1080i only the decoders.

Interesting! So I'm actually watching 1080p
Far from it that's for sure!

With Dstv you just get fokol p.

This match would have been a great thing to put on their 4k test stream but that only has My Little Pony on it.

Their compression algorithm sucks. I still can't believe that on the decoder an 20 minute SD episode is around 300MB, while the HD equivalent near a gig. Meanwhile downloading an H.264 episode is 1080p at about 300MB for an hour long. They could even use the royalty free VP9 or the AV1 codec, but the decoders will probably stutter due to garbage coding.

I wouldn't call it a non issue.
1080p and 1080i are visually different in fast action scenes.
Most people can see it when pointed out.
Your eyes must be poor if you can't see it or see the difference.

"Due to the fidelity and fully-displayed frames, a 1080p video delivers a sharper and more refined image which can provide better quality during scenes with lots of motion.

Interlaced video suffers in scenes with lots of motion, as it only displays half an image at a single point in time. This makes it difficult to display fast movement.

Compared to progressive scan, interlaced video has more jagged edges and motion artifacts."

interesting thing I noticed while watching soccer on the DSTV Now app on my TV, the ball movement is much less jittery when watching on through the app than natively on the old HD PVR

I also noticed that the PVR does sometimes jump / skip frames.
Very obvious on channels that have horizontal ticker text - eg news channels.
A Samsung S9/iPhone X/Huawei p20 cell phone has at least 10x the CPU, RAM & Video rendering performance of a DSTV PVR (even the Explorer 2).

The decoder is good. The constantly stoned Dev team that writes the software, not so good.

Probably more. Hardware decoder.
That's one of the main reasons to battery life improvements in low power CPU for the last couple of gens for general browsing.
