The three kids were apprehended while breaking into Challenger and Charger Hellcats in a storage lot at Dodge's Jefferson North Plant in Detroit.

Younger Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids have a lot of love for the Dodge Charger and Challenger. My own 11-year-old son loves them. Just the other day, he sent me a screenshot of a build he did on a Charger SRT Jailbreak. Some kids, though,seem to take that love too far. Fox 2 Detroit reports that three kids, all under 16 years old, attempted to steal multiple brand-new Hellcats straight from the Dodge factory.

Detroit police caught the kids, aged 11, 12, and 14, in a storage lot at Dodge’s Jefferson North Plant. The kids had been attempting to break into Charger and Challenger Hellcats that were stored in the lot. The cars they were trying to take were worth between $80,000 and $90,000.

Police are still trying to figure out whether the kids were doing it on their own, or working on behalf of someone else. “To me in my mind, I would think somebody a little older got these kids out here and are putting in orders,” Lt. Clive Stewart, head of Detroit’s commercial auto theft unit, told Fox 2. “The older offenders know, ‘I can do this and not really have my hands on it because I didn’t really steal the car.’”

The Dodge Challenger Shakedown is the first of seven special editions we’ll see this year

Dodge is killing off the V8-powered Challenger and Charger. Here’s the first special edition to celebrate their lives

Just last week, Dodge announced that it would launch no fewer than seven special editions of either Charger or Challenger to mark the passing of both models in their current V8 forms.

So, as promised, here is the very first. This is the Dodge Challenger Shakedown – a throwback to a concept car (called the Shakedown Challenger) that Dodge unveiled at the SEMA show for wildly modified vehicles back in 2016.

Just 1,000 Shakedowns will be built in total, with 500 units in ‘Destroyer Grey’ and 500 with the additional widebody kit painted in ‘Pitch Black’. Obviously there’s a Mopar shaker hood (hence the name), plus plenty of bespoke graphics and Alcantara seats with red stitching.

Based on the Challenger R/T Scat Pack there’s a 6.4-litre V8 making 485bhp up front, while buyers of the Shakedown will get 20-inch wheels, red Brembo brakes and ‘Demonic Red’ seatbelts. Scary.

Dodge's Next 'Last Call' Model Is the Dodge Charger Super Bee

Dodge’s farewell tour for the Challenger and Charger continues with these... uniquely named ‘last call’ models

It’s hardly a secret that English words mean entirely different things, depending on which part of the world you’re speaking them. But as little as we care about arguments over what, exactly, constitutes a muffin and whether a trainer is a person or a pair of shoes, we’re still amazed by the name Dodge has given these limited-run Chargers and Challengers: ‘Scat Pack Swinger’.

Certainly a bold name, but then neither car is exactly of the ‘speak softly and carry a big stick’ school of thought. Not to say they’re wielding twigs or anything – some 485bhp of Hemi V8 isn’t going to hit without a thump, of course.

So, aside from that name, what do you get from a Challenger or Charger Scat Pack Swinger? Well, some iridescent green paint, late-Sixties-style graphics, big six-piston Brembo brakes and more gold-painted bits than an early Bond film. Including, as you’ll no doubt see, the 20-inch wide, 11-inch deep gold wheels. Mm. Subtle.

Fifth of seven ‘Last Call’ Dodge Chargers inspired by 1969 model owned by ‘Big Willie’ Robinson

Production of the Dodge Charger and Challenger will be wound up before too long, but don’t forget both cars are going out with a bang with seven ‘Last Call’ special editions: the orange beast you see above is number five in that swansong.

Anointed as the Dodge Charger King Daytona, it’s inspired by the 1969 model owned by William ‘Big Willie’ Robinson, described by Dodge as the ‘monarch’ of the West Coast drag-racing scene of the Sixties and Seventies.

Big W nicknamed his car ‘King Daytona’, and Dodge’s homage to that famous car gets much orange and a sprinkling of more power.

Only a sprinkling, mind: based on the SRT Hellcat Redeye, the King Daytona ups the supercharged 6.2-litre engine’s ante from 797 to 807hp, while all the other additions are merely aesthetic.

The ‘Go Mango’ exterior is coupled with reams of orange stitching inside, as well as satin black graphics and rear spoiler, chrome badging, 20-inch carbon wheels, Nappa/Alcantara seats, a suede headliner, a powered sunroof and a Harmon Kardon sound system, among much else.

Only 300 will be made, with pricing info to come when order books open in the autumn.

The sixth edition of the “Last Call” editions for the Challenger is a tribute to a 1970s street racer.

Dodge continues to roll out special editions for the Charger and Challengers as the iconic muscle cars are on their way out for 2024. So far, five special editions of been released. Dodge is now dropping the sixth and its coolest and darkest edition yet. Enter the Challenger Black Ghost.

The 2023 Challenger Black Ghost is a tribute to the original Black Ghost Challenger from the 1970s. It was driven by a driver now known to be Godfrey Qualls who came to be a legend on Detroit’s Woodward avenue by driving a Black Challenger, beating all who came for him and disappearing into the night, leaving drivers wondering just what the hell happened.
