The Dreaded PC Reset/Shut Down

Would a CPU warm up in literally under 1 second, I know it goes up to 50 degrees but but...? I do not think it can be the GPU as its doing it on 2 different cards,[...]
Also the CPU stress tests are working fine over many hours, surely it would crap out then if it was going to?
Yes, without cooler it can trip in a second. I agree, as you tested different cards, CPU is a primary suspect.
As for the final question, different tests engage different areas on the CPU. Thermal compound can be dry only in some areas or applied improperly. And finally, on my laptop power supply test heats up CPU more than stress test.

Don't think it's the CPU, you can just try running a game on your cpu's onboard GPU
If everything is fine, your stuck with PSU and GPU.

Also note even though GTX970 uses "less" power, most of them I've seen has been overclocked.
Check the 12v amp ratings on those power supplies.

There's also big power spikes on those cards.

Oh and use GPU-Z program to check GPU temp.

Well Landmark was happy to help me out with testing my PSU, CPU, RAM and motherboard even though the only thing I bought through them was the board.

Will let you know what happens.

The Corsair has like 40 amps on the 12v rail so it "should" be enough. Everything else is difficult because it usually just turns off in 1 second, so not much to report on.

As i feared they were unable to replicate the issue, however they have sent the board to the supplier for testing as well :(

I am going to swear off PCs if they come back with nothing. This is just not worth the cost and effort.

Did they test it under load?
Also not being able to replicate the issue, is it even a big issue if it happens so rarely?

It's pretty weird if it happens @ one physical location and not another.

It happens literally every time it goes under load, so all the time. My last ditch effort if they cannot help is to try build it outside the chassis and if it sill doesn't work, try a different power source like at work or a friends.

After that I sell everything and move on with life.

Have you checked your GPU?
You are have the same problems I had.
I tested everything, replaced motherboards 3 times, replaced PSU twice, replaced GPU, tested ram, etc.

It turns out that every time the supplier tested my card they never had an issue.
They decided to RMA my card and replaced it with a 2nd hand card :(
I tested the card and it to had issues.
After the 3rd RMA the problem magically vanished.

The GPUs themselves seemed to not play nicely with my system.
But eventually they did send me a GPU that worked without a hitch and the problem has never returned.

Its possible, but it did it with a older 560Ti and a newer 970gtx so in my mind i ruled the GPU out.

I had the same issue.
I tested 4 GPUs, they all did it.
Eventually I seemed to find the right GPU, PSU combo and everything worked.
It was a ballache and a good 6 months of RMA between Takealot, Matrix computers, Rectron, etc.

Good Luck.

That's what I don't get, how can THEY not re-produce the problem then.
Do you have a power meter?

Think it might be a good idea to check your power output and see if Eskom isn't giving you too much power or something.

Happened once when they upped ours to 250v, power supply starts doing strange things.
You can also check the power output of a power supply, see if it gives the correct amount of output.

So, the dealer and supplier were unable to find a problem :(

Next step test outside the PC case (didn't think of this) and if that fails test it at work with different power. If that does not work... I give up.

Sad panda.

Yip, well it has a name just no something i recognize. The supplier however tested using my corsair PSU.

Could you tell us what brand it is?

If you have a multiplug strip, i suggest you eliminate that first.

As per my original post, I have tried a different multiplug, in addition this issue is experience on both the Corsair and generic PSU, but i will get a name anyway.

Long delay in an update...

Put the 970 into a mates PC today since I have been suffering crashes in GTA5, also reset under heavy load (OCCT). So might be 2 faulty GPUs? Anyway going to RMA the 970 to Wootware, will let you know how that goes.

Wish I had DOA'ed when I originally got it :(

Didn't have problems since I got my motherboard back from Landmark, great guys btw, but I was only playing Diablo 3 which is not that much of a power hungry game. It was only after I started with GTA did I need to revisit this.

Watch it be 2 components which are faulty now. lol.
