The driving licence card printer has broken down again

Sorry to hear about your blown mind but unfortunately the decision makers don't have a mind so there's that.

Also, there's no good money to be made in redundancy.

Being constantly on the verge of disaster is a great way to get to the front of the money mill, even if, and especially if you're surrounded by other competition cadres... just ask the municipalities, make sure that pipe replacement that serves thousands of angry tax paying scum is as far away as can be so that urgency money printer can go brrrrrrr.

I'm also intrigued by this having to send the printer to Germany thing.. surely its cheaper to send out a tech from Germany, have a look at the machine then get the much smaller parts sent out to be fixed on site. Will be quicker as well

Yeah, me too but we're not card printer technicians so what do we know.
Maybe the printer just needed a vacation, some good beer alongside a bratwurst, and some -actual- newly cultivated cultural diversity.

A few schooners of good beer ...

you know corruption is the ANC middle name right?

I mean how many times did the ANC ask for a Private jet? and got denied everytime when the existing jet does the job.

I can see all kind of issues of people renting cars especially overseas. Who overseas is going to accept a temporary drivers license. I am glad I got mine renewed end of last year as I rent cars quite often and overseas so once in a while as well.

South Africa has sent its only driver’s licence printing machine to Germany for repairs,

I've seen pics online of the printer. It is not small, so sending it over makes very little sense.

My dad works in the offset litho industry, which are not small machines, and he uses machines manufactured in Germany. The local engineers they use have either gone over to Germany to be trained or received training locally when the companies send out their German engineers to do training. If the problem cannot be fixed by a local engineer, one will be brought in from Germany. In the case of spare parts, those not already held by the local subsidiaries can be ordered from Germany.

I myself have experience with the digital printing industry using products manufactured in Japan. The best technicians get flown out to Japan for training on new products and then become the local experts who will fly around the country and train local techs. In an extreme case where an issue cannot be resolved by a local tech, one from Japan will be flown out. Spare parts not already held in the local inventories can be ordered from Japan.

The card printing machine in question is 20-years old.
  1. Why do we not have a trained technician? Or two?
  2. If we do have one, why is it not possible to import the necessary parts based on the assessment of a local tech?
  3. If we do not have a trained technician, it would be significantly cheaper to bring a tech over from Germany, have them assess things and then only fly in the necessary parts.

your approaching this problem from the point of view of a 1st world country,

not some backwards, Communist loving, terrorists sympathizing, backwater with convicted criminals in government, who use the tax ficus as a personal slush fund,

the machine is old for a REASON, that being its purchased through 100 companies owned by 200 cadres,
the parts are long out of production, unless its through 100 subsidiaries making the price 100 times more than it needs to be

reason its broken (again) is because the money to fix it is the politicians Easter holiday fund.
just like Eskom when it breaks, and then works suddenly, and then breaks whenever they want a payday,

the ANC realized its very profitable to invent crisis to fund their 8th Bugatti
