The Droid TV thread

This is what I'm currently seeing on their website, that's $192 about, which works out to just under R2700. It says in stock on my side. The one with the controller is out of stock though.

If you don't play games what are the benefits besides beefy specs of the Shield over the MiboxTV?

I own both. There's no official update for the Android 7 on the Mi Box yet, there's a beta though. You're going to be guaranteed updates for some time to come on the Shield.

The Mi Box is good, but the Shield is like the gold standard at this point. If you're prepared to wait for the the Shield to ship with the controller for R3100, that's obviously the better option, but you can always get a controller later, or use a third-party one if you wanted.

In my personal opinion with regards to TV OS Android 7 is not worth double the price essentially for what mine does it performs well, leading it down to literally two factors:

Your own personal use case and your budget.

Sure. If you can afford it, the Shield is the best. But the Mi Box is a pretty great second choice, I used that for most part of a year now until I could get the Shield.

If however you do plan to do gaming on an Android Box, the Shield is definitely the better one. Streaming games from my PC to the Shield felt just as good as playing them directly on the TV, using Moonlight on the Mi Box was... ok, but nowhere near as good.

Hi y'all. Is there such a thing as a (relatively) future proof casting/streaming device on the market that won't break the bank. My experience in this regard some 3 years ago left me rather tainted (not exactly plug & play). DSTV/SS and pay channels aren't a concern in my summations. Opinions please?

Now we're talking!!! Pity though that these devices are Wi-Fi only (guess that's a form factor limitation). Mind sharing where you ordered from and what your experience was like to your door?

Ordered through Scottshipping on this forum
Ask him for quote

Took 21 days to my door ( had to wait 8 days for flash sale to end before shipping from China Gearbest

Thanks. That's awesome. I will look into it further.

If anyone has the insight, is there any reason why one would go the Mi TV box instead of this? (I note that the Mi TV is also highly regarded here)...

This may be totally off topic (apologies if so) but the new Apple TV 4k with Kodi sideloaded makes a glorious Kodi Krypton box.

The new A10x fusion processor is extremely fast compared to the older A8 in the ATV4.

For R2999 a worthy alternative to the Shield et al.

CEC HDMI remote control also great - can control the ATV from the Samsung remote fwiw.

With XCode 9 you can sideload apps wirelessly over the network - no need to use any other hacks.

Visuals are excellent.

/end of heathen apple talk.

New XCode 9 can wirelessly sideload ? ah that’s great new must of missed that announcement I had to do the Apple TV USB C story before I gave up and just bought MrMC (which has extreme limitations).

All I hope for is now that SuperSport support Android TV boxes they jack up with a Apple TV DSTV Now app rather than having to airplay.

You mean Mi Box?
If so because it has Android TV OS which is optimized for your TV including the apps found in playstore. It only requires a remote to operate and doesn't need extra peripherals.

Yes the Android TV playstore is limited but that's because apps have to follow the Android TV UI and must work a normal remote, you can still sideload apps easily

Sorry, you're right Mi Box. I don't know the distinction between Android and Android TV. Will have to research that too. This get's quite complex and shows why there's still a market for DStv (pity it's so bad and expensive)

Can the DSTV Now app be sideloaded
