The Droid TV thread

Ok, same question, different date - and hopefully new options: best Android TV Box for the R1.5k - R2k market?

Should include (or be able to install):

  • 4K
  • WiFi ac
  • 2GB RAM
  • DSTV Now
  • Netflix
  • Amazon Video
  • ShowMax
  • Android TV 7.0 (possibly Android TV 8.0 ambitions)

Local would be lekker, import if I must.

PS: if this question has been answered in the last few pages, i.e. the last few weeks, please point me to the discussion.

From GEARBEST. It took 7 days and R500 less...

BREAKDOWN:
Gearbest price: $69.90 (R833.23)
Shipping (priority with tracking): $6.60 (R78.67)
Import Taxes: R277.84
TOTAL: 1189.74

Thus, R608.26 saving. And it takes +/- 6 days longer.

Sometimes, it can get stuck in customs. I find if you ship over the end of the month it takes longer...

Mi Box was my first choice, but it's stuck on Android 6.0 - unless you've heard any news?

That's to satisfy my wife and kids - I'd like it to be able to do more. However, at the end of the day satisfying the former is more important.

Still seems like we're beholden on Telkom to allow the installation of the Android TV version - this will not work for my wife and kids and the LIT is, for now, not an option.

Maybe I'm missing something but on both your questions - Android 6 can do a lot so don't need to have anything later (hell mines is on Kit kat and works fine) it's nice to have a later version but not much difference.

Not sure why it wont work for wife an Kids - side load it and add it to the home screen, its there only need to do this once (and if updates they don't need to do it you do it)

Isie, I've had a LIT box - the sideloaded version is the tablet version and is does not play well with the remote:

I believe this can be done, but you will have to do some "mouse" navigation with your remote. Pretty much like DSTV on a device without Android TV...

As such, this is not an option.

I have a car radio that has (very) outdated Android due to the lack of enthusiasm of the developers to upgrade - with Android 8 coming to devices such as the LIT it seems only a matter of time until the Android 6 devices are relegated to the dustbins of history.

Netflix will come, you can sideload a modded Android TV version in the meantimebut only goes up to 1080p.

Seems there are already issues with Android 6 and below:

Can it be upgraded to Android 7.1 and will Dstv now work after upgrade?

Answer: Unfortunately it cannot be upgraded. Only older versions of DSTV Now will work on this unit

A Chromecast Ultra in combination with a tablet is pretty much future proof. I understand the remote requirement , but some people with Android Boxes still find the need to use a device as a remote.

Have been considering a Google Home/Chrome Cast combo - but I think it might be too much for the wife. Got to roll out technology in stages, in this house ;)

If you can use the Dstv Now/Netflix app on your phone you can use it with a chromecast - that is why there is a casting button in apps. Pretty much all the mainstream apps have " casting buttons " these days , and it is growing. Flawlessly

Don't tempt me - but I'm afraid wife === mind blown.

If she doesn't understand it, it will be filed under "waste of money".

Then just import the Nividia Shield, it's already got the Oreo update, I think it's around R2500
