Are you using the USB port marked OTG on the device? With a short cable to a USB 2.0 port?
You only need to hold the recovery pin for a few seconds after plugging in the power. USB cable must already be connected.

Otherwise Ubuntu doesn't need any drivers to recognise the device, but the upgrade procedure is a bit more complicated.

Yes. Cable not short though. Probably about 1m. Would that affect it?

Cant see thats its the driver.

It has ugoos firmware. UT3S.

Rockchip 3288

You must use an OTG cable. The one that shipped with my Nagrace is 30cm long. Voltages can drop too much with longer cables.
Thanks do you know where I can get one? Bought mine 2nd hand. Never had cable.

Which doesn't have much more information on it either, saw no mention of what OS it's running or anything.

They say it can run DSTV Now and Supersport, which is what caught my interest.
I know, very vague indeed. No mention of ram either, or I missed it.

where can i find a cheap non-4k android tv stick/box anyone?
i've used android tv years ago, want to give it another shot.

Lol
Cheap is relative
Someone may argue that you can't find an expensive one if you tried.
Been there done that and I'm happier with my Pi3+Kodi than any android box for TV.

Razer Forge TV runs Ds and Sup apps natively although it's most disliked device. I think it's awesome

Hows it compared to v6?

The V6 is still the faster model with a better CPU(2x), GPU(3x) for high-end gaming and running Android + Linux, 1.6-1.8Ghz Quad Core A17 CPU.
The N8 is a budget model but with the latest hardware codec support like 10-bit h264, vc1, vp9 and MM firmware, recommended more for streaming and casual gaming, 1.5Ghz Quad-Core A7 CPU.

The NT-N8 with v1.2 firmware & V6 with v1.8a firmware run Showmax from 4 Dec correctly now.
The NT-N8 is still available on Amazon(with an airmouse), from UK sellers & Aliexpress(the listing just expired, but should be updated again in a day or so).

There is a new RK3399 chipset tv box that will be released early next year based on the same CPU, GPU and other hardware that this device has https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1771382379/firefly-rk3399-six-core-64-bit-high-performance-pl will be quite interesting.
