The Droid TV thread

It’s out about 2 weeks back already just navigate back on the thread...to be honest sounds crap and would rather get a MiBox

The problem with MiBox is no real DSTVNOW, unless 'sideloaded', no hardwired NW device and the chip a bit aged...

I am sorry that the Telkom device turned out to be a POS, it would have been nice to have a 'local' supported device...

On another note, I am getting quite good DSTV NOW on a "R-BOX PRO". This one DOES have G-LAN, Dual WiFi and DDR3... Better priced than a MiBox...

It’s sideloaded yes but still that’s the nature of Android TV and how it will be, unless you getting a box that runs standard Android then that’s the way to go about it.

Sideloading a APK takes 2 minutes on the thing anyways no real big fuss for something that actually streams darn well.

WiFi performs just fine, USB to Ether jack also equally as fine, but yeah what ever suits your needs, there is a reason why it’s a great device still in my view...

Getting just perfect streaming on a MiBox, SuperSport, DSTV Now, Chrome streaming, Kodi...

Better priced? The R Box is more expensive than the MiBox ?

DStv Now is hit and miss on Android media players, it works on some and others it doesn't

No...
Compared:
PRICE MI: $88.99
PRICE R-Box: $49.43
CORE MI: QUAD
CORE R-Box: OCTA
MEM MI: 2/8
MEM R-Box: 3/16
HW NW: N/A
HW NW: 1Gbit

So, R-Box = Better Priced, Better Spec'd... AND you do not have to "side-load" older releases of DSTV NOW.

Does this answer your questions?

It’s not all about pure CPU grunt but rather the ability to decode formats, anyways if you happy with what you got then so be it...enjoy your device it’s a pointless argument of what you prefer to what I prefer.

This is so true! I have had devices that works one moment and then doesn't. I have had so many variables that, to identify a single-working device becomes a nightmare. The biggest problem is 90% of devices does not have 1Gbit connections, so in a huge "KODI" environment with MySQL backends and high-quality content it becomes just too slow to manage.

The ultimate would be to get a device supporting 1Gbit and KODI and DSTV (and other) out-of-the-box, but that is where I believe DSTV watches 'threads' and kills off devices the moment they are identified with 'sloppy' upgrades. (I have had confirmation on this when I was still working in the "Rockchip" developments...)

just my 10c

You have to run the Hide Root app.

It works in miy AT585, but the quality is certainly not HD. I'm not sure if it's because it's optimized for phones and tablets, or if it's just my media player.

Then again, yesterday I tried NetFlix for the first time, also certainly not even 720p.

i have found DSTV Now v1.21 works on most boxes. The ones it does not, is the ones that have a default (abc123456789) serial ID.

(have not been able to change or bypass the default serial ID )

So much talk about DSTV Now performance on different boxes... What is the official word from Multichoice on what DSTV now is supposed to do on (1) Normal Android and (2) Android TV with respect to Resolution and picture quality (thus - dimmed picture quality and if so WHY? )

I think I asked this in my post above. Perhaps it's optimized for a mobile device, not a large screen television?

I just got my mi box last week.
Side loaded dstv app.. no "hide my root" hd quality.. but slightly dimmed( uped the brightness on my tv)
Kodi runs very well.. all on Wi-Fi about 15 meters from router on 50 mbs on fibre.
Netflix is 108p most of the time.

Any word that dstv will do a subscription for online streaming only.. on media boxes?

Can you select the video quality on the dstvnow app? I always find the quality on the app much lower than the website regardless of the speed of the connection.

I don't know.
But the quality is great.. just dim

You can adjust quality but noticed even at it highest setting on app quality on ss1 is only 540. Atleast Im going to final this weekend.... GO SHARKS!

Tennis on ss7 has better quality most of the time Ive heard. (probably 720)

Sideload Google Chrome and run SS through that. That’s how I get to watch my Forumla 1 at max quality and it streams and handles beautiful on the MiBox, just a FYI

Yea, thats how I do it but I do find the stream online is a little bit more delayed than the stream on the app. Also my mibox struggles a little when opening the stream through the site.
