The e-tag Spotting thread

eh...to busy keeping my eyes on the road to inspect the interior of other cars. You know...being responsible and stuff.

/am considering - getting someone to make a look-alike dummy and placing that in the car.

"I don't know why your device did not work" :p

The UAE Salek one is so much better, credit card thin and you can trim it down to a 3cm x 3cm sqaure and it still works :) I have my suspicions about the local e-tag, I suspect it does more than just "identigy" you... [tin foil hat on]

True that. Its just a NFC card. For that volume it could have a gps tracker and a recorder fitted.

Does the e-toll use a two factor method to confirm your account, utilising the e-tag and the license plate? If the encryption on the transmission isn't difficult to crack and they don't check plates, you could in theory intercept someones e-tag and broadcast that ID (preferably a government vehicle) whenever you pass through a gantry.

I crashed my car so for the past 3 weeks I've been driving a courtesy car from Tempest with that annoying beeper below the rearview mirror.

Does anyone know who will be liable for the fees when using a rental car fitted with the E-Tag?

I just called dollar thrifty as I need to hire a car in JOHANNESBURG... They said they don't have any e-tags fitted and no costs to drivers currently...
Hope it stays that way... Or they adding it to the rental fees to all drivers?

If credit cards can be cloned I wonder if these can also be cloned. It would nice to clone the tag belonging to Sanral's chief wizard and distribute a few thousand of them.

That seems like the most logical move. So since Thrifty does not have the tags you might have to pay a bit more and I bet there will be some hidden costs to compensate for the extensive admin work needed to allocate responsibility of payment to the different people renting the car in a month.

How are other car rental agencies working ?? ( except faulty Avis whom I will never use again for just supporting e-tolls)

Europcar will issue you an invoice for all the gantries you passed whilst hiring their cars:

We have tagged and registered our entire fleet to cater for vehicle movements between regions. We have also ensured that we only bill those customers who use e-toll roads. We are not imposing any blanket charge on our customers.
Europcar SA has worked hard over the past two years, pioneering integrations, processes and systems in order to limit the administrative burden to you our customer. The e-toll charge will be incorporated into your rental invoice and will appear as a single cost line.
For rentals checking out on, or after the 3rd December the following important changes will be implemented.
 E-toll road usage will be charged at the gazetted standard tariff.
 In line with the gazetted maximum charge per month, Europcar SA will cap the maximum e-toll charge to R450 per rental agreement.
 Where a refundable rental deposit is applicable to a rental, the cash deposit or card authorisation amount will increase by R450.
 For customers who have split billing arrangements where renter pays for part of the rental, Europcar SA will bill the e-toll to the renter unless we are advised otherwise by you.
 Processing the e-toll billing through SANRAL is a new, additional step which could result in your final invoices and refunds be delayed by a further 24 hours in affected areas.

I was looking and counting this morning.

2 in 35 cars I passed (Pretoria).

Drove to a function in Edenvale, played spot the etag, hardly anyone has, I doubt it is even anywhere around 5 -10% at the moment, hope it stays like this. January is going to be a bitch on the back roads, oh well.....
