R5k vs R3k - still must be good stuff. I am guessing normal Mp3's dont cut it for use with these headphones?

Normal mp3?
Normal mp3 to me is 320kpbs, nothing less.
But if you're talking 192 kbps then yes, it's a noticeable fall-off of sound.

Wave or flac with a decent headphone amp & soundcard, it's bliss.

They go for about R3000.

I still don't understand why you'd spend that much on in-ear buds.
Even with a laptop I'd gladly use open backed over ear headphones.
They have a larger sound stage and are 10x more comfortable.
If you're buying at that price then you are concerned about audio fidelity which makes me wonder why in-ear compared to over ear headphones.

R3k from Amazon yeah, literally half price at the moment.

3 months ago I would not have dropped dough on IEMs, but I've been using them almost solely the past 3 months, and I enjoy the comfort and isolation (at times). As well as that they are driven with ease from any 3.5mm port.

I don't think one can easily compare these to headphones, or state things about sound stage and other properties without actually listening to them. Before researching, I would also have felt they would lack sound stage etc. but these seem to be some serious IEMs with serious sound quality.

If you've spent time researching the IE 80s and already reached conclusions, then my apologies, you may be right.

If I don't like them I'll go for some Sennheiser HD 5xx (uses to have HD 595s, loved them!).

Look forward to testing vs HD 650s, I hope to be pleasantly surprised at high end IEMs' capability. :)

PostmanPot - I don't doubt they are very good, I was more trying to understand your reasoning strategy behind buying in-ear compared to over-ear.

Couple reasons: Compact and portable, uses 3.5mm jack, no amplification needed, no 6.35mm (HD 5xx and up have it) to 3.5mm converter needed, can fall asleep with them on. IEMs are the best for listening to music or what ever else while falling asleep. I've also been getting into ASMR. ;)

Perks of the IE 80s: Top sound quality, adjustable bass response on each IEM, detachable cable from the IEMs, IEMs are flat enough and should allow them to be worn comfortably when sleeping and the side of my head/ear is on pillow. 2 year international warranty.

I need my desktop PC (and sound card/amp) to use my HD 650s properly. These IEMs will be for everything else, which I frequent more these days than sitting at my desktop PC.

I wanted good IEMs and none are designed as well as these IMO. Many others are bulky and would not be conducive to being slept on/against.

The Amazon reviews are extremely favourable and some also compare vs other brands' high end IEMs. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-IE...UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=byRankDescending

I'm not sure how many of you take the time to search for new music or at the very least search for similar artists that you may like.
I'm always searching and found a nice little surprise.

Maramza ft Moonchild - Cut the cake

That tracks making the rounds on 5fm and other stations.
Interesting deep tech.

I hadn't really heard of Maramza so took a few minutes to checkout naasmusic and Maramza's releases.

I found this gem;

Dope sauce.

Wow what a song....

The Prodigy - Wild Frontier. People quite divided on the new tracks. As a long time fan, I like it

Luke & Jimmy - Yellow Magic (warning for the dubsteppers, drum and bassers...it's a bit disco :p)
