The F-35 thread

Have you guys just got a general America-is-the-bestest-ever-at-everything attitude or you just ignorant on the topic?

I have been aware of this issue for a long time and I don't follow this sort of thing, so I really don't know why you aren't aware of this massive failure.

You don't know my opinion of the F-35 don't you. I think the US could've done way way better for the money but it still means that the platform isn't one of the best in the word. If I had to chose I would be in a Growler anyway.

You're real smart for such a dumbass.
You can Google, do a search, you will quickly find out that your beloved F35 can't fly in lightning.

Are you saying the article I linked to is incorrect? Did you even read it?

Or as usual have you just got your head so far up your own ass that all you can do is talk crap.

Seriously, this is not a tricky one to get stuck on - the F35 can't fly in lightning, this has been a fact for quite a while.

Go do some actual research rather than just assuming the US could never screw up so badly.

*pats on the head* its ok buttercup.

I know the things you talk of.. does it mean the F-35 is running at optimal levels? No... does it mean the F-35 is a POS plane? Not even fscking close.

And it actually CAN fly in lightning, but the inert gas system has a flaw and for safety reasons they haven't lifted the restriction. It always helps to understand the context within a restriction is put in place.

Well you said:

Let me tell you about the S-400 missile battery that Turkey bought instead... I also have a horse to sell you

So unless I misunderstood, you were saying I was wrong.

Unlike ToxicButthole though, you seem to know when to stop digging the hole you find yourself in......

Hahaha yeah you just find that out now genius. Google is a wonderful thing isn't it

So my point stands, it can't fly in lighting. And guess what, lightning takes place in rainstorms, so you're not gonna want to fly them in a the rain either.

You're so far up the US's bunghole it's not even funny.

The S-400 system can't hit the broad side of a barn unless its a friendly aircraft as proven in Crimea.

Your point doesn't stand.
It can fly in lightning, but for safety reasons (and the Pentagon tends to err on the fscking ridiculously over the top safety) because surprise surprise surprise, a Pilot is a very fscking expensive and time consuming resource to train.

It's been in service since 2013 and only in 2022 did they get a "sort-of" "nearly-there" fix for the problem.
And no, it still can't fly in lightning, or you know, it would........

The most widely used version of the F-35 still can’t fly in lightning, and despite hardware and software modifications, the Pentagon doesn’t have a path forward to lift ongoing flight restrictions.

In June 2020, the Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office instated flight restrictions for the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing variant after damaged tubes were found inside its key lightning protection system, the Onboard Inert Gas Generation System, or OBIGGS.

Air Force Times reported earlier this year that the program office could clear the fighter to begin flying within 25 miles of lightning after testing a fix for the OBIGGS system this summer. However, after assessing the hardware and software upgrades, the JPO has recommended flight restrictions remain in place, according to Chief Petty Officer Matthew Olay, an F-35 JPO spokesman.

“Due to additional findings earlier this year, this upgrade will provide an improvement, but is insufficient to lift the lightning restriction,” Olay told Breaking Defense. “Lightning restrictions will be lifted when all safety concerns are resolved or acceptably mitigated.”

You are aware there is a difference between can't fly in lightning, and the pentagon won't approve flights near lightning for potential safety risks (and the risk level of that is not revealed, and you also have fsckall clue what the Pentagons risk appetite is in situations like that.)

You got a source for that fact?

Or did you just Google it like you did the lightning problem earlier?
