The F-35 thread

If you see the small print Gripens were also involved in the intercept.

Handed over to Swedish Gripens when they entered their airspace.

Translation

Two Dutch F-35s took off from Estonia yesterday to intercept two Russian Su-27s and two Russian Backfire bombers.

Two Swedish JAS 39 Gripens took over from the F-35s east of Gotland.

And I suspect the Russians didn't know the F35s were there until they knocked on the window and said: "License and registration please".

So much for the initial common air-frame.

Slightly different fairing sounds logical as the B has the lift fan assembly (and a slightly different wing iirc) and the C doesn’t.

It’s still the same gun and as squadrons don’t operate a mix of B and C’s I’m not sure where the problem is.

“Differences in the outer mold-line fairing mount make the gun pods unique to each variant (i.e. an F-35B gun pod cannot be mounted on an F-35C aircraft).”

As already noted, the GPU-8/A and the GPU-9/A do both contain the same gun and the same amount of ammunition. From available pictures, outwardly the two pods look virtually the same, but beyond that, what the total level of commonality between them might be is unclear.

Three different air frames from the beginning.

It’s 3 variants of the same airframe, why are you rehashing arguments from a decade ago? This really isn’t breaking news or even new info…

The 3 variants share between 70% and 90% commonality of parts.

F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter (JSF) is a stealthy, supersonic multirole fighter developed by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company for the US Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps and programme partners from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) and US allies.

The single-seat fighter was designated the F-35 Lightning II in July 2006. The JSF is available in three variants: F-35A, a conventional take-off and landing aircraft (CTOL); F-35B, a short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft; and F-35C, a carrier variant (CV). A 70%-90% commonality is required for all variants.
